Google Assistant gets new visual cues and integration with Google Maps

  • Google updated Assistant with a new visual design and integration with Google Maps.
  • The visual features includes the ability to order from restaurants and a snapshot of your day.
  • The visual design will be available later this year, while integration with Google Maps will arrive later this summer.

Google Assistant's upcoming visual tweaks are not just for show, as folks will be able to order from restaurants, keep track of their day, and share arrival times with others within Google's virtual assistant.

The new visual cues include mixed visual and voice interactions that almost go full-screen when you ask certain questions. For example, you can ask Assistant to change the temperature in your living room and it presents you with an interactive thermostat to further fine-tune the thermostat.

The new cues also include the ability to order food for pick-up and delivery within Assistant. Google partnered with Starbucks, Doordash, Dunkin' Donuts, Domino's, Applebee's, and other restaurants for Assistant.

While you order your drinks from Starbucks, you might notice suggestions based on the time of day, location, and recent interactions. Those suggestions are part of the new snapshots that Assistant will present.

These snapshots also include notes and lists from services like Google Keep, Any.do, Todoist, and more. In a strange way, this almost feels like the return of the defunct Google Now.

In addition to the visual cues, Assistant will make its way to Google Maps. Thanks to the integration, you can send text messages, play music and podcasts, and get other information without leaving the navigation screen.

Assistant's new visual design will be available later this year, while integration with Google Maps will arrive later this summer.
