- The shortlist of Emoji candidates for 2019 are available for the public to view.
- The theme of the 2019 Emoji update is accessibility, with wheelchairs, prosthetic limbs, and guide dogs.
- The list is not definitive and could change before the 2019 Emoji rollout.
We're only a few months away from the 2018 Emoji update! The new additions include some new smileys, a bunch of new animals, some superheroes, and even a mooncake Emoji.
But what about the 2019 Emojis? The shortlist for candidates to be added to the Emoji canon next year are available now for you to peruse. Not all of them will make the cut, but you can at least get an idea of what the list might look like.
Right away you'll notice a theme: accessibility. There are prosthetic limbs, wheelchairs, a probing cane used by the blind, a service animal vest, and more. It's clear that the Unicode Consortium – the organization that creates and disperses Emojis – want to make sure that people with disabilities have Emojis that apply to their specific situation.
There's more than just accessibility updates, though. There's a new "bored" smiley face that looks like its yawning; a new "pinch" Emoji that looks like a human hand pinching something; some new bathing suit options; and even a garlic Emoji. There's also a blood Emoji, which is merely a bright red drop of liquid.
Remember, not all of these will make the cut next year. However, it's a good bet that the 2019 Emoji updates will include a lot of accessibility Emojis for our disabled communities to use to express themselves.
