  • Asus quietly announced the Zenfone Live L1, the company's latest budget smartphone.
  • The Zenfone Live L1 runs Android Go, though another version of the phone runs regular Android.
  • The Zenfone Live L1 will launch May 17 for around $108.

Taiwanese manufacturer Asus announced the Zenfone Live L1, the company's latest budget-oriented smartphone that runs Android Go.

The Zenfone Live L1 joins the growing ranks of phones that run Google's lightweight version of Android Oreo, namely the Nokia 1 and ZTE Tempo Go. As such, expect Asus' budget phone to run Google's suite of apps built for Android Go, such as Google Maps Go, Google Go, and Files Go.

That only applies to the variant with 1GB of RAM. There is another variant of the phone with 2GB of RAM that runs Asus' ZenUI 5.0 on top of Android Oreo.

According to the announcement on Asus' forums, the Zenfone Live L1 features a 13MP rear camera, 5MP selfie camera, 5.45-inch HD+ (1,440 x 720) display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, Snapdragon 425 chipset, and 16GB of expandable storage. The phone sports a microSD card slot that supports up to 2TB of additional storage.

The 3,000mAh battery should be enough for at least a full day of use, but make sure to not throw away your MicroUSB cable.

Apart from lacking a USB Type-C port, the Zenfone Live L1 also lacks a fingerprint sensor. Instead, Asus implemented its Face Unlock feature to get into the phone. Due to the lack of dedicated hardware, do not expect the feature to be as secure as a fingerprint.

Finally, the Zenfone Live L1 will be available May 17 in rose pink, midnight black, white, and blue. The version with 2GB of RAM is exclusive to Southeast Asia, while the 1GB of RAM variant will launch in other regions.

The Zenfone Live L1 will reportedly go for around 1.5 million rupiahs (~$107), though Asus did not announce pricing details at the time of this writing.
