tinyCam Monitor gets updated to version 8.0 with Android O support and MP4 cloud recording

If you own a home security camera, chances are you've already heard of tinyCam Monitor. It's one of the most full-featured surveillance apps on the Play Store, and pairing it with any average security camera will get you virtually all the functionality of something more professional like the Dropcam for a fraction of the price.

The developer behind tinyCam continues to work incessantly to improve the app, and has just announced an update to version 8.0 (just 6 months after 7.0 was released, actually).

Android Wear 2.0 update is arriving on six more watches, but still no mainstream ones

Yesterday, Google finally gave a reason on why most Android Wear watches still haven't received the long-awaited 2.0 update: "a bug found in final testing." Some commenters speculated that this might have something to do with Snapdragon chipsets, given how the first few watches that received the update used chipsets from other manufacturers. That being said, five of the six watches on today's list sport the Snapdragon 2100.

This news comes courtesy of our pal Ernest the community manager over at Google's Android Wear support forums.

Blitz Brigade: Rival Tactics will turn the GameLoft shooter into a tactical strategy game

A while back, GameLoft released Blitz Brigade, a team-based first-person shooter similar in style to Team Fortress 2, complete with over-the-top action and characters. Now the company is spinning off that game with a new entry, Blitz Brigade: Rival Tactics. This tactical strategy game looks like it will be GameLoft's answer to similar mobile titles like Supercell's Clash Royale.

Like Clash Royale, Blitz Brigade: Rival Tactics looks like it will have a cartoon-like art style, but with a G.I. Joe vs Cobra influence rather than a fantasy theme. The game will allow players to select a team of eight units from a large number of hero characters, vehicles and power-ups. Your online squad will fight in PvV battles in arenas against opponents, and you can also make alliances with other players as well.

GameLoft has already set up a pre-registration page for Blitz Brigade: Rival Tactics, which you can check out at the link below. Registering and liking the game's Facebook, Twitter and YouTube pages will help to unlock pre-release goals for all players like getting more in-game cash, opening up crates in the game and taking part in daily challenges. There's no word yet on when Blitz Brigade: Rival Tactics will be released.

April Fools Roundup: All the jokes from around the web

April Fools Day is almost upon us, but some companies aren't waiting to share their pranks. Google always does a great job, from the Pokemon Google Maps overlay to a smart mailbox, but there are a few from other companies worth mentioning. Here's a rundown of all the hillarious (or strange) tech-related April Fools Day jokes from around the web.

Google Gnome

One of Google's product launches from last year was the Google Home, a $129 smart speaker with Google Assistant.

Luma 2-pack is $179 ($71 off) on The Home Depot for today only

We've been seeing more and more competition among mesh Wi-Fi networking kits over the past few months, with even Google dipping its toe into the segment with Google Wifi back in October of last year. One big advantage Google Wifi has over some of its competitors that have been on the market for a while longer is price: whereas a three-pack from eero would set you back $499 and $399 from Luma, one from Google costs only $299.

A new BlackBerry-branded Android tablet could be in the works

BlackBerry is still trying to reinvent itself as a software company, but it is allowing its name to be used on Android hardware devices made by others like the DTEK 50, the DTEK 60, and the upcoming KEYone. Now the CEO of BlackBerry, John  Chen, has hinted strongly that we could see the company's name on an Android-based tablet.

Blackberry KEYone announced: here's what you need to know

February 25, 2017

CrackBerry reports that in his remarks to financial analysts today as part of its fiscal fourth quarter 2017 conference call, Chen said that BlackBerry is moving into the next phase of its licensing program and that means that "you may soon see a BlackBerry tablet". He added that he could not make any promises on releasing such a product, but he did state that one of BlackBerry's partners is "very excited to build a tablet based on Android, and so they wanted us to give them the portfolio rights to do that."

Chen did not state which company wanted those tablet rights. BlackBerry currently has agreements with China-based TCL Communication, India-based Optiemus and Indonesia-based PT BB Merah Putih that allow those companies to make and sell smartphones with the BlackBerry brand name. Chen said today that the tablet proposal was "not a 100% committed thing" but if it does happen, BlackBerry would receive royalties from its sales. The tablet would also use BlackBerry software and Chen stated it would handle "the QA and portfolio management"

If such a tablet is released, it would not be the first such device with the BlackBerry name. In 2011, the company released the BlackBerry PlayBook, a 7-inch tablet that ran on its own custom OS. Even with a ton of marketing and advertising, the PlayBook ultimately got mixed reviews and poor sales.

That potentially dangerous Nest Cam has been fixed

Nest Cams are incredibly convenient, but having a permanent connection to the Internet can also be a security risk.

Update, March 31: Nest has rolled out a silent update to fix the bug, and claims no one was ever affected. In a statement, the company says that "all Nest camera customers now have the updated software. To our knowledge, no customer's camera was ever affected by this issue and customer video remained safe. This isn't the first time we've updated our security measures, and it won't be the last, as we continue to look for ways to improve our products, such as the introduction of two-factor authentication last month."

Nest, the Alphabet company that scooped up to take over its smart home ambitions, has a problem. Its Nest Cam line, which includes the (admittedly excellent) Outdoor model, has a dangerous bug that allows a would-be thief or hacker (or hacker thief) to send a signal over Bluetooth to force the camera into a reboot, disabling the unit for up to 90 seconds.

The vulnerability was discovered last October and reported to Nest in October by Florida-based security expert, Jason Doyle, but the cries went ignored, so he felt he had no choice but to make them public in hopes of pushing Nest to do something about it.

There are three issues, all to do with problems in the camera's always-on Bluetooth connection, which end up forcing the unit to either reset or seek out a non-existent Wi-Fi network. All three issues have the same effect: they take down the Nest Cam entirely. Of course, said hacker would need to be within Bluetooth LE range for the connection to be made — some 60 feet in good conditions, but more likely 30 feet — but now that the exploits are out, such antics could become more common.

For its part, Nest has released a statement claiming that it would be sending a patch to all Nest Cam and Dropcam models "in the coming days," after discovering and patching the issue internally. Good news for active Nest Cam users, but let's hope Dropcam has a method of forcing such an update to customers that wouldn't otherwise be aware of the problem.

You'll also be able to choose between four button layouts. Even so, some have complained that the controls are too hard. In any case, it's $1.99 with no in-app purchases.

Link Twin

It's relatively cheap at $1.99. It's fun and worth a shot.

Mushroom 11

Price: $4.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Mushroom 11 is a post-apocalyptic puzzle game. You'll play as a giant pile of fungus. When you destroy part of the blob, it regenerates on the opposite side of the blob that you destroyed. You use this mechanic to move it around levels until you reach the end. There are seven different worlds to play through, dozens of achievements, and mechanics built-in to let you track things like speed runs and scoring challenges. It's a solid effort, especially considering that it's a pay-once game with no in-app purchases.

Octave

Price: $1.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Octave is a point-and-click horror game. You'll play the role of a dude who gets dragged into a dark forest somewhere where a bunch of creepy stuff happens. You'll have to find things, solve puzzles, and proceed through the plot to make it out alive. It's not the most graphically appealing game ever, but the mechanics are solid. The only issue is that you can only save the game after you complete a chapter. That means you're locked in for a while. Otherwise, it's $1.99 with no in-app purchases.
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY

Shadowmatic

Price: Free / $2.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Shadowmatic is a unique puzzle game with some fun mechanics. The game works by dangling random objects in front of a light. Your job is to move, twist, and turn the objects until the shadow it projects is a coherent image. It contains over 100 levels with many having secondary objectives as well. The free demo will give you the first 14 levels for free. You'll have to unlock the rest with a single $2.99 in-app purchase. It's a fun and family friendly puzzle game.
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY

Splitter Critters

Price: $2.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Splitter Critters is a platform-puzzle game. The mechanics in this one are fairly unique. You literally have to slice levels in order to proceed. Obstacles that get in the way have to be moved by cutting the level apart and removing them yourself. That's kind of fun. Otherwise, the game has some colorful graphics and cute characters. Those wanting to give it a shot will have to shell out $2.99. At least there are no in-app purchases.
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY

Super Mario Run

Price: Free / $9.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
The famed Super Mario Run is now out on Android. It only took about three months to get here. For those who somehow don't know, you'll play as Mario as you run through levels. You'll need to avoid some obstacles, collect coins, and more. It also features an online multiplayer mode as well as a bit of a builder mode as you rebuild the Mushroom Kingdom. The mechanics have been a bit polarizing, but objectively speaking, the game works pretty well. It's free to demo or you can fork out $9.99 for the full version.
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY

The Frostrune

Price: Free / $2.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
The Frostrune is a point-and-click adventure game with a deeper story line than most. You'll find your character shipwrecked during the summer time. The idea is to find stuff and overcome obstacles in order to find out what's going on where you landed. It's filled with stuff like Norse mythology, Viking myth, and other similar concepts. It's a decent game that shouldn't take long to play. You can download the demo for free or pick up the full version for $2.99.
