Google Lens makes its way to the Xperia XZ2/XZ2 Compact’s camera app

Sony Xperia XZ2

  • Sony announced Google Lens integration in the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact's default camera app.
  • The Xperia XZ2 Premium will also feature Lens in the camera app.
  • During Google I/O 2018, Google announced that itself and other companies will integrate feature Lens in their smartphones' default camera apps.

Available within Google Photos for most Android smartphones, Google Lens is available in the Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact's default camera app.

According to Sony, all you have to do is update the Google app in the Play Store and Lens should show up as a new mode in the camera app. Sony also mentioned that the upcoming XZ2 Premium will also feature Lens in its camera app out of the box, with no update required.

Once you select Lens on the Xperia XZ2 or XZ2 Compact, you should see the redesigned UI that showed up in the most recent update. Along with the refreshed visuals, Lens now features real-time search that automatically loads results as you pan to different objects, copies and pastes text from real-world objects, and identifies articles of clothing and furniture.

Editor's Pick

The good news is that you do not have to own one of Sony's latest smartphones for easier access to Lens. During its developer conference, Google announced that itself, LG, Motorola, Xiaomi, HMD Global/Nokia, OnePlus, Asus, and other manufacturers will eventually get Lens in the default camera app.

Lens in the camera app works as it does in Google Assistant. You can use it to identify landmarks, products, animals, plants, and text, copy and paste text from real-world objects, add events to your calendar, add contact information, and more.

Samsung wins update lawsuit in the Netherlands, won't be required to update all phones for four years

It's been a long time in the making, but the lawsuit by non-profit consumer group Consumentenbond against Samsung in the Netherlands has finally ended. The Dutch court has ruled in Samsung's favor, saying that the Consumentenbond's claims could not be enforced due to potentially unforeseen circumstances.

The case was first introduced in January 2016, with the Consumentenbond saying that Samsung should provide new software updates for four years after the initial release or two years after the retail purchase of the phone.

OxygenOS 5.1.2 for the OnePlus 5/5T brings gallery tweaks and some fixes, and downloads are available

OxygenOS 5.1.2 is out (well, it's been out for a couple of days) for the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T. It doesn't bring with it many new features, but the May 2018 security patch and quite a few fixes are in tow. The download, weighing in at a hefty 1.61GB, is out now.

Here's the changelog:

Changelog:

System

  • Updated Android security patch to 2018.5
  • Fixed auto-rotation stability issue
Gallery
  • Places: a map view of photos by location
  • Added "Recently Deleted" collection
Wireless & Network
  • Fixed Wi-Fi connecting issue
Launcher
  • Double-tap to lock screen
Earphone
  • Fixed microphone not functioning issue for AKG earphones

The gallery gets the most attention here with two new features that we'd already seen on OOS 5.0.3 for the OP3/3T: Places, which shows a map view of your photos by location, and Recently Deleted, which shows you --- you guessed it --- your recently deleted photos.

Google Calendar now lets you write a message when meeting details are changed

Google Calendar may be used by a tons of companies to schedule meetings and events, but it's not perfect. However, Google has just corrected a long-standing qualm that many have had: not being able to inform meeting attendees about why a meeting was revised.

Prior to this update, changing a meeting's time or deleting a meeting altogether would leave attendees in the dark about why the meeting was rescheduled or canceled.
