Essential might be in trouble, but you wouldn’t know it from all the recent PH-1 updates

  • A new Essential Phone camera update just launched via the Google Play Store.
  • This new update is in spite of the company's announcement last week of the potential of a major restructuring.
  • It seems like Essential will keep supporting the Essential Phone until it simply can't anymore.

Although last week Essential dropped the bomb that it is canceling the Essential Phone 2 and probably going to sell off the company, you wouldn't know it from all the updates it is issuing for its only mobile phone product, the Essential Phone.

Today, the company is pushing an update to the Essential Camera app, which improves the UI and adds new functionality to help with editing and sharing 360-degree photos. The company announced as such in a Twitter post:

Earlier this week, Essential tweeted that it just pushed some bug-fixes for the Android P developer's preview. In the replies to that tweet, the company confirmed that the Essential Phone will receive two years of software updates and three years of security patches, regardless of what happens in the future for the upstart manufacturer.

Considering some of the biggest smartphone manufacturers in the world – including Samsung, LG, Xiaomi, and more – can barely keep up with software updates for two years after they release a device, the fact that a company floundering is making that commitment is extraordinary.

Editor's Pick

Today's update to the camera UI is especially notable as one of the most common criticisms of the Essential Phone is its camera, which felt like a half-baked product when the phone first hit shelves.

Although the Essential Phone 2 has definitely been canceled, it is still unknown how intent the company is to sell off to someone else. Rumors abound that there are parties interested in the company, but nothing firm has been announced yet.
