- Google just released the fourth beta build of Android P.
- This is the final beta, which means the next version of Android P will be the public release.
- Android P Beta 4 will likely not be much different from the upcoming stable version.
Dave Burke, Android's VP of engineering, posted today in the Android Developers Blog that the final beta version of Android P is here: Android P Beta 4 (otherwise known as Android Developers Preview 5).
Android P Beta 4 is the last beta of the platform, which means that the next version to see release after this will almost certainly be the stable Android P.
In the blog post, Mr. Burke encourages app developers to test their apps vigorously on this latest beta to make sure they are ready for those Android users who will be among the first to adopt Android P in the next few months.
Previous beta builds have introduced new features into Android, but it seems this newest build is simply an incremental update to the previous beta. According to Burke's post, this version includes "everything you need to wrap up your testing in time for the upcoming official Android P release."
With all the APIs and system behaviors solidified in Beta 4, it's unlikely that we'll see any major changes between this version and the official launch of Android P.
According to the Android P release timeline, we are right on schedule. Beta 4 (aka DP5) was slated for the end of July – and here we are. The final release of Android P could come at any point in the third quarter of the year.
Sometime between now and then, we'll learn what the official flavor of Android P is. My vote is for Android Popsicle, but I'm in the minority amongst Android Authority readers.
If you want to give the latest Android P beta a shot, you can go here to install it on your Google Pixel device. Eventually, it will be available for other devices as well, a list of which you can see here.
