Check out this stretchable battery that could power your future wearable

Most smartwatches and fitness wearables need to be designed in a certain way because they need to house a rigid battery. However, a team at Stanford has a good idea for how to fix that: what if you had a stretchable battery that could move with your body?

As first shown off on the Stanford engineering site, the stretchable battery prototype can move, bend, and stretch in all manners of ways. While that's happening, the current created by the battery is unaffected.

In the video above, you can see how the battery (the goopy-looking white thing) powers a small LED light. Notice that as the person stretches and moves the battery around, the light doesn't even so much as flicker.

The team at Stanford created this prototype based on previous technology. In many lithium-ion batteries (such as the one in your smartphone), there's a polymer gel that moves negative ions to the battery's positive pole, which creates energy. The Stanford team figured out a way to make that liquid polymer into a more solid material, which you see in the video.

Not only does this make the battery easier to handle and less prone to leakage, but it also reduces the risk of the battery catching fire.

As one would expect, this prototype is not at all ready for any kind of commercial application. As of now, it stores about half as much energy, ounce-for-ounce, as a "normal" Li-ion battery. The team is hard at work though, making the battery stronger, able to hold more energy, and larger.

If this stretchable battery does become a commercial product, it could radically change the way wearable technology is designed. Imagine a wearable that wraps around your wrist in a consistent manner, rather than a band with a large protruding chassis holding a display and the battery. Sounds nice to us!

Here are the leaked specs for the Motorola Moto G Stylus

Motorola stylus leakevleaks

First, we found out that a Motorola phone with a built-in stylus existed. Then, we learned its name (the Motorola Moto G Stylus), and now we're learning most of its specs, thanks to XDA Developers.

Keep in mind, these specs are leaked and shouldn't be seen as official in any way. However, XDA is pretty confident in their accuracy and they give us a good enough idea of what to expect from the Moto G Stylus.

Check out the leaked specs below:

  Motorola Moto G Stylus (Leaked)
Display 6.36-inch
2,300 x 1,080
Punch-hole cutout (top left)
Processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 665
RAM 4GB
Storage 64 or 128GB
Cameras Rear:
48MP f/1.7 Samsung S5KGM1
2MP f/2.2 macro camera
16MP f/2.2 117° wide-angle "Action Cam" sensor

Front:
25MP f/2.0
Battery 4,000mAh
10W wired charging
USB-C
Audio Headphone jack included
Security Rear-mounted fingerprint sensor
Connectivity NFC (not all regions)
Dual-SIM (not all regions)
Software Android 10
Dimensions 155 x 75mm (no depth reported yet)

The specs for the Motorola Moto G Stylus make it pretty clear that this will not be a replacement for a Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus. Instead, this device appears to be ready to compete with LG's line of stylus-including smartphones, such as the LG Stylo 5.

Related: Love the S Pen? Motorola might have a new phone for you.

XDA's source wasn't able to confirm pricing or availability for the Moto G Stylus. However, it's a good bet we'll see this phone launch at or around Mobile World Congress 2020, which is only a few weeks away now. Once it does launch, we expect the Moto G Stylus to land all over the world, including here in the United States.

Along with this new smartphone, we also expect a brand new flagship from Motorola to launch soon. That device should be ready to compete with the big dogs and even include a Snapdragon 865 chipset. However, further details are pretty scarce for this phone as of right now.

How to legally watch Super Bowl LIV for free and in 4K! (Update for Roku users)

Super Bowl LIV FOX banner

Update, January 31, 2020 (04:00 PM ET): If you own a Roku-based TV, or use a Roku-based streaming device, you might need to make some extra arrangements to watch Super Bowl LIV for free. Because of a carrier dispute between Roku and Fox, all of the Fox-based Roku apps will stop working after today, January 31. That includes Fox Sports and Fox Now.

In a blog post, Roku offers some alternatives to watching the Super Bowl for free on its devices, although none of them will support 4K resolutions:

  • You can stream the Super Bowl on an internet-based live TV service such as fuboTV, Hulu Plus Live TV, Sling TV,  or YouTube TV.  If you are a new customer, you can sign up for a free trial for these services.
  • If you are a Comcast or Charter Spectrum cable subscriber, the game will be available for free via the Roku Xfinity or Spectrum apps, via your local Fox TV affiliate.
  • The NFL Roku app may also stream the game for free, but Roku warns that Fox could block that stream.
  • Finally, as a last resort, Roku TV owners can connect an HD antenna to their televisions and watch the game over the air via their local Fox affiliate.

Original article, January 20, 2020: The Super Bowl is one of the biggest sporting events in the United States, with an average of 160 million viewers annually. Whether you're watching from your phone, Android TV or at a friend's place, we want to help you watch the Super Bowl. Here's how to legally watch Super Bowl LIV (2020) in the US between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs.

When and where

Super Bowl LIV airs all over the Internet, but here are the basics of where and when. As an interesting point of fact, FOX plans on airing the Super Bowl in 4K resolution, the first time that's ever happened.

  • Air date and time: Sunday, February 2nd at 6:30PM EST/3:30PM PST.
  • Where: Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, Florida.
  • Channel: FOX Network and local FOX affiliates. It will not air on FOX Sports channels but it will air on the FOX Sports official app.
  • Alternative: The official FOX NOW app (iOS link). You need a cable subscription to use the app to stream. However, you do get it in 4K resolution if you stream the game.
  • Compatibility: FOX has a list of compatible devices and web browsers here. It works on all major platforms, including Android, Apple, Roku, FireTV, Android TV, Xbox One, and Samsung Smart TVs.
  • Price: Believe it or not, FOX is allowing people to stream the event for free on the official website and official app. Simply head to one of them, create an account, and you're ready to go.
  • How to watch the Super Bowl in 4K – FOX is streaming the event live in 4K from the website and the app. You simply need to download (or visit) those resources to stream it in 4K. You will, however, need a device that supports 4K, a TV that supports 4K, and an Internet connection fast enough to stream 4K.

Those are the official spots to watch the game. However, there are a ton of other places to watch as well.

YouTube TV Logo

Legal streaming

A host of piracy sites will do the job, but they aren't great and we don't recommend them for obvious reasons. There are some legal streaming options for Super Bowl LII, though. Here are a few:

  • FOX NOW and FOX Sports – This is the first, most obvious, and easiest choice. FOX is actually streaming the event for free so you don't need any additional software or subscriptions to view the game.
  • YouTube TV – One of many good Internet TV apps. This one has support all over the US and it should have your local FOX affiliates as well. Check here to be sure, though.
  • Hulu TV – Hulu is airing the Super Bowl this year through local FOX channels. You can make sure those channels are available in your area by clicking here.
  • Sling TV – One of the original Internet TV sites is still a reasonably decent service for watching the Super Bowl. Sling is battling with FOX Sports right now, but the Super Bowl is airing on the regular FOX channel which is still available on Sling TV. You can double check availability here.

Streaming services are a good way to watch the game, especially this year with FOX streaming the game for free and in 4K.

Digital TV antenna

The game will also air on local FOX affiliates. Those who live in cities (or close to them) or otherwise have an antenna to get local channels can watch the game for free without doing anything special. Antennas are relatively inexpensive, depending on what range you need. Plus you get free TV all year with them. DTV channels also often air in 720p HD, the same resolution as cable TV.

  • Coverage maps: The FTC has a coverage map of DTV services in your area. All you have to do is find out how far the FOX tower is from your house and buy an antenna with enough power. For instance, if the tower is 20 miles away, you need an antenna with at least 20 miles of range in order to pick it up. We recommend going higher, as getting it right on the money can result in a fuzzy picture.
  • Where to buy: You have a few options if you don't already own one of these. You can pick one up locally at your nearby Best Buy stores or buy one on Amazon. They are almost always under $100 and usually under $50. This one is a decent pick if you need a recommendation.

The cost for this one is a little larger up front than streaming options. However, this is a one-time purchase and you get TV even after the Super Bowl. We're not sure why more cord cutters don't use these for local TV at least.

Other solutions

Here are a few other ideas for those struggling to get these solutions working. They're roundabout solutions, often-suggested solutions by others, and ideas for those who simply can't get the game to stream.

  • Attend a Super Bowl party –  We know, it's a lame idea, but we're trying to cover all of our bases here. Obviously, a Super Bowl party has the Super Bowl! We're so smart.
  • Go to a sports bar –  Same thing as the Super Bowl party. It could be lame, but at least there will be food and refreshments!
  • Follow the event on social media –  This one won't actually show you the game, except in snippets, but following the NFL's official pages on websites like Twitter and Facebook will get you up-to-the-minute updates. Google Search shows live scores. You can also follow sports blogs, personalities, individual team accounts, and more. They often post short highlight videos or GIFs during the game too. It's not comparable to streaming, but it's something.
  • Attend official watch parties – There is an official watch party at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Those in Florida can definitely try that since it's free to the public.

Again, these aren't amazing ideas, but we're covering all of the bases.

If we missed any good ways to watch or stream Super Bowl LIV, tell us in the comments!

Crazy idea: Maybe Huawei should permanently abandon official Android

Huawei Mate 30 Pro vs Mate 20 Pro cameras

Opinion post by
C. Scott Brown

Yesterday, a pretty big rumor dropped. During a press conference, a Huawei representative said that the company won't pursue using the official version of Android with Google services if and when the Huawei ban ends. Instead, Huawei's Android ambitions would be focused on its own fork, Harmony OS.

Of course, this would mean that Huawei's current issue of its smartphones lacking access to any and all Google apps would continue indefinitely.

This news was quite startling, to say the least. However, a subsequent statement from the company seemed to cast aside the claims of the PR rep. Although Huawei didn't really confirm or deny things, it strongly hinted that it would happily bring the official fork of Android — along with Google apps — to its phones if given the opportunity.

Maybe, though, Huawei should stick to the original statement. Maybe it's time for Huawei to go all-in on Harmony OS and do what it can to bring a viable alternative to Android and iOS.

If anyone can do it, Huawei can

Huawei Logo CES 2020

Before the Huawei ban began in May of last year, Huawei was on track to become the biggest smartphone manufacturer on the planet. Even now, with the Huawei ban hindering its growth, the company was still able to officially overtake Apple in 2019 to become the world's second-largest OEM, just behind Samsung.

If there's any company today that has the financial resources and raw talent necessary to bring in a viable third choice for smartphone operating systems, it's Huawei.

Related: The Huawei and US debacle: The story so far

As an example, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, which launched after the Huawei ban took effect, does not ship with Google apps on board. Despite this handicap, Huawei still shipped 12 million units of the device. With over 1.3 billion Chinese consumers who are used to lacking access to Google, Huawei could experiment with its own operating system comfortably without worrying too much about its bottom line.

Sure, it would be a long-term investment and there would inevitably be short-term losses as the company tries to find its footing and develop Harmony OS to have its own identity. But it would prevent something like the Huawei ban from happening to the company again as well as further the company's ambitions as not only a smartphone manufacturer but as a technology creator.

It's easier said than done, though

Obviously, creating a new operating system to compete with Android and iOS is no small feat. The deck would absolutely be stacked against Huawei here.

Over the years, we've seen plenty of competitors try to break up the duopoly. In fact, we even have a whole article dedicated to the major operating systems that tried and inevitably failed to sway consumers away from Google and Apple.

Even disregarding that, Huawei would have major difficulties in encouraging wide adoption of Harmony OS for one major reason: it's Huawei. The Huawei ban exists because the United States government doesn't trust Huawei and there are numerous (as yet unproven) accusations against the company related to espionage, IP theft, fraud, and even violations of international treaties.

We've seen plenty of companies try and fail to compete with Google and Apple.

However, Huawei is already working on tidying up its image. It's dedicated billions of dollars so far to fixing up its cyber security situation and other countries — most prominently the United Kingdom — are ready to give the company the benefit of the doubt.

Huawei is already in a bad situation. It's going to need to dig itself out of the hole it's in regardless, so why not use this opportunity to turn lemons into lemonade and develop Harmony OS as a viable third option on the way?

Maybe the industry needs a shake-up

Huawei Mate 20 Pro wide shot of home screen

It's no secret that the smartphone industry is in a bit of a shambles. People aren't buying smartphones as much as they used to and innovation (outside of foldables) is pretty stagnant at the moment. Maybe a new operating system is just the kind of fire OEMs need to turn the market around. Maybe a real, potent threat that the billions of people who use Android and iOS just might jump ship to something else would scare companies into taking some real risks.

As I said earlier, there aren't too many companies out there right now that could do this, but Huawei could. With that in mind, 2020 could be one of the most important years in Huawei's history.

What do you think? Is it time for a third OS choice in the smartphone industry? Would you go through the growing pains of a new OS with Huawei at the helm? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
