Galaxy Z Flip 5G specs leak suggests big chipset upgrade, little else

  • A new leak has detailed apparent Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G specs.
  • It looks like the 5G foldable is getting a Snapdragon 865 Plus processor.
  • Unfortunately, it seems like this is one of the few upgrades over the 4G model.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G has been certified on Bluetooth SIG this week, taking it one step closer to commercial availability. Now, it looks like leaks have given us a good idea of what to expect in terms of core specifications.

Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station has posted several apparent Galaxy Z Flip 5G specs, and it looks like the phone will be getting a Snapdragon 865 Plus chipset clocked at 3.09Ghz. This would be a major upgrade over the 4G-enabled Galaxy Z Flip, which offered a Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset instead.

There's no word if this processor will actually be called the Snapdragon 865 Plus or something different though. A Meizu executive claimed earlier this year that a Snapdragon 865 Plus isn't in the works. Nevertheless, Qualcomm previously released the Snapdragon 821 as a minor upgrade over the Snapdragon 820, and it also released the Snapdragon 810 v2.1 chipset as a mild upgrade over the Snapdragon 810 v2.0 SoC. So it's possible we won't see the Snapdragon 865 Plus name but that an upgraded Snapdragon 865 still exists.

Other Galaxy Z Flip 5G specs shared by the leaker include a 6.7-inch FHD+ main screen, a 1.05-inch external display, dual 2500mAh+704mAh batteries with 15W charging, a 12MP selfie camera, and 12MP+10MP rear camera pairing.

We're not quite sure about the cameras, as the 4G version offers a 12MP+12MP rear camera combo and a 10MP selfie snapper. And Samsung has offered a 10MP selfie camera on most of its recent flagships. So it's possible the camera sensors are jumbled up in this new leak.

China's TENAA website has also published a Galaxy Z Flip 5G listing. We were unable to access the latter, but MySmartPrice has managed to take some screenshots nonetheless. The screens also seem to mention the same battery capacity and external screen size, suggesting that there isn't any improvement in this regard compared to the 4G model.

It looks like those expecting the Galaxy Z Flip 5G to be a comprehensive upgrade over the 4G model might be disappointed then. But hopefully Samsung is able to deliver a more palatable price tag.
