The best Nokia phones you can get your hands on

Nokia was once the biggest smartphone manufacturer in the world but lost its appeal when it decided to overlook Android and start making Windows-powered smartphones. The company was sold to Microsoft in 2013, which decided to kill the Nokia brand a little over a year later. Thankfully the story didn't end there.

HMD Global gained the rights to make and sell smartphones under the Nokia name at the end of 2016, effectively bringing the iconic brand back to life. It released a few interesting smartphones in its first year of business, which have grabbed a lot of attention on the market. So which are the best Nokia phones on the market? You'll find our breakdown of the top high-end, mid-range, and budget models below.

Editor's note: We will be updating this list regularly as new devices launch.

Best high-end smartphone: Nokia 8

If you're looking for the most powerful Nokia smartphone, this is the one to get. It sports a 5.3-inch QHD display, the Snapdragon 835 chipset, and 4 or 6 GB of RAM — depending on the region.

The highlight of the device is its camera. You'll find two 13 MP sensors on the back with Zeiss optics that allow you to capture those popular bokeh images. The handset also features a "Bothie" mode, which lets you use front and back cameras simultaneously for split-screen photos and videos.

The Nokia 8 is a great smartphone, but it's not perfect.

The Nokia 8 is a great device, but it's far from perfect. It looks dated because of its large bezels that don't belong on flagships anymore. It just doesn't have the "wow" factor that would make it stand out, like the majority of older Nokia handsets had.

But it does have something many users love: stock Android. That's right, the Nokia 8 ships with the vanilla version of Android Nougat on board, which can be upgraded to Oreo.

The handset wasn't released in the US, but it is available in Europe, India, and a few other markets. It launched with a price tag of £500 in the UK (now £400) and ₹37,000 in India, making it more affordable than flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S8 and LG G6. While the flagship might not be the very best on the market, it's a great 'first' flagship and the  absolute king when it comes to the best Nokia phones you can buy.

Best mid-range smartphone: Nokia 7

best Nokia phones

The Nokia 7 might not be a flagship, but it still packs more than enough power under the hood for the average user. It comes with the Snapdragon 630 chipset and either 4 or 6 GB of RAM.

The device sports a 5.2-inch Full HD display and a single 16 MP primary camera with Carl Zeiss optics. Like the Nokia 8, it also features the "Bothie" mode that lets you capture images and videos with both the front and back camera simultaneously.

Editor's Pick

The Nokia 7 has a glass back and a metal frame for a premium look and feel. It's IP54 rated, meaning it's resistant to splashes — but won't survive a dip in the pool. It runs a stock version of Android Nougat, packs a 3,000 mAh battery, and offers 64 GB of expandable storage.

It's the best mid-range smartphone in Nokia's lineup, but it does have a major drawback: it's only available in China. Well, at least for now. It's possible that it will make its way to other markets in the near future, although I wouldn't hold my breath. But you can always buy it from one of the many Chinese retailers that ships worldwide like AliExpress.

The smartphone launched with a price tag of ¥2,499 (4 GB of RAM) and ¥2,699 (6 GB of RAM), which translates to around $385 and $415.best Nokia phones

Honorable mentions:

Nokia 6

best Nokia phonesThe Nokia 6 packs a little less power under the hood than the Nokia 7, but it does offer a larger 5.5-inch full HD screen. It's made of metal, features a 16 MP primary camera, and packs a 3,000 mAh battery. Other things worth mentioning are 3 or 4 GB of RAM, an 8 MP selfie snapper, and dual-SIM support. The smartphone was announced back in January 2017 and made its way to the US in July

Nokia 5

best Nokia phonesThe Nokia 5 made its debut at MWC 2017 in Barcelona and offers solid specs and an affordable price tag. It sports a 5.2-inch HD display, the Snapdragon 430 chipset, and 2 or 3 GB of RAM. The metal smartphone offers a simple design that doesn't stand out much, which can either be a good or a bad thing depending on your preference. It wasn't officially released in the US, but you can still get the international model on Amazon.

Best budget smartphone: Nokia 2

best Nokia phones

This is the cheapest Nokia smartphone you can get your hands on — it retails for only $100. In addition to the low price, the smartphone's biggest highlight is the massive 4,100 mAh battery that should be good for around two days of use.

The Nokia 2's specs won't blow your socks off, which is expected given its price point. It sports a 5-inch HD display, is powered by the Snapdragon 212 chipset, and has 1 GB of RAM. That's still good enough for browsing the web and using social media, but the smartphone isn't the best when it comes to multitasking and performing more demanding tasks.

The Nokia 2 has an aluminum frame and a polycarbonate back, and runs stock Android like the rest of the company's lineup. It ships with Nougat on board but will be upgraded to Nougat soon.

It features a basic 8 MP camera, has 8 GB of expandable storage, and comes with IP52 drip protection. The device was announced in October and made its way to the US a month later. If you're looking for a smartphone on a tight budget, the Nokia 2 just might be up your alley.

Nokia 3

best Nokia phonesAlthough this smartphone is more expensive than the Nokia 2, it still won't break the bank.
