It was only the end of January when we reported that HMD Global was pushing Android 8.0 Oreo to the Nokia 6 (2017 version) and the Nokia 5. Now, here we are, at the end of March, and both phones are now being upgraded to Android 8.1 Oreo.
Unfortunately, for now anyway, those updates are only going out to Indian versions of the Nokia 6 and Indian, Tunisian, and Indonesian versions of the Nokia 5. Other markets can probably expect to see updates in the next few days, but we don't have any confirmation on that.
Both updates come in at under 1GB each, and for some reason must be downloaded while the phone is connected to active Wi-Fi. To update your Nokia 5 or Nokia 6, simply head to Settings > System updates and check for a new update while connected to Wi-Fi.
Nokia has been setting the bar pretty high when it comes to delivering timely updates to all of its devices. The company's de facto flagship, the Nokia 8 (2017), got Android 8.1 Oreo in February, roughly two months after Google released the first official build.
2018 looks to be a great year for Nokia phones, coming in on the back of a stellar year for the brand in general. We got some hands-on time with the Nokia 8 Sirocco at Mobile World Congress 2018, and left thoroughly impressed with the upcoming flagship. There's also a mid-range Nokia 7 Plus that is due for a global release soon after dropping in China and selling out quickly, as well as an update to the Nokia 6.
