Update, April 25, 2019 (12:30 pm ET): Fortnite's latest update (v8.50) is now live, bringing with it the teased Avengers: Endgame game mode. This time around, instead of just being able to play as Thanos, players will be split up randomly between Team Thanos and the Hero team.
The gameplay of these limited matches also changes slightly compared to the previous Marvel-themed mode. If you're on Thanos' team, you will have to find the six infinity stones. The first player to find a stone will transform into Thanos. After that, each of the remaining five stones will increase the player's powers and raise the health of their teammates.
If you're on the Hero team, you get to fight with weapons belonging to Avengers. These include Iron Man's repulsors, Thor's ax, Captain America's shield, and Hawkeye's box and can be found in chests. Players on this team will also get a treasure map to help them find a "Mythic Avengers item."
Players in this game mode will respawn until either team completes their mission. The Hero team's objective is destroying Thanos and his army, while Team Thanos will have to collect all six infinity stones and then finish off the Hero team.
Epic did not state how long the Avengers: Endgame mode will last. The Avengers: Infinity War game was short-lived, so don't expect it to last more than a week or two.
Original post, April 22, 2019 (12:10 pm ET): Avengers: Endgame hits theaters later this week. To promote the movie, Marvel is hosting a crossover event with Fortnite. Unfortunately, we don't know precisely what the game's developer, Epic, plans to introduce into the game.
As you can see from the official Fortnite Twitter account's tweet, the crossover is set to take place this Thursday, April 25. Other than the line, "Whatever it takes," — a quote from an Avengers: Endgame trailer — all we see is one of the game's characters holding Captain America's shield.
Whatever it takes.

Marvel partnered with Fortnite last year for the release of Avengers: Infinity War. During a limited time game mode, players fought for the Infinity Gauntlet. By wielding the in-game item, players were able to become Thanos.
As the teaser photo from the tweet highlights Captain America's shield, a similar game mode might soon come to Fortnite. As Epic has yet to release any information about the upcoming update, we can only speculate that players might be able to pick up the shield and gain unknown powers over others.
