Asus ROG Phone 2 specs: A new level of insanity

Asus already launched its 2019 flagship with the Zenfone 6, but the company isn't done. Enter the ROG Phone 2, the follow-up to last year's gaming-centric ROG Phone. If you thought the ROG Phone 2 wouldn't be ridiculous, we suggest taking a seat.

The fun starts with the 6.59-inch AMOLED display, featuring a 120Hz refresh rate. Previously, you could only get such a high refresh rate on a smartphone if you were okay with an IPS LCD screen, but no more. We fell in love with the OnePlus 7 Pro's 90Hz AMOLED display, and we're very impressed with the ROG Phone 2's 120Hz AMOLED display so far.

Let's take a look at the rest of the Asus ROG Phone 2 specs in the table below.

Another headline feature is the debuting Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus. It's an overclocked version of the normal Snapdragon 855, which means better CPU and GPU performance. It also means more heat, which is why the ROG Phone 2 features a 3D vapor chamber cooling system and includes an external cooler in the box.

You'd need a beefy battery to keep the display and processor ticking, which is why we're happy to see a 6,000mAh battery. It's one of the largest batteries we've seen, though the Zenfone 6's 5,000mAh power pack delivered average endurance. Here's hoping that's not the case with the ROG Phone 2.

There's plenty more to the ROG Phone 2, such as up to 12GB of RAM, up to 512GB of UFS 3.0 storage, a 48MP primary and 13MP ultra wide-angle rear camera, air triggers that act as shoulder buttons, and 802.11ad Wi-Fi connectivity. The phone even features two vibration motors set at different frequencies, a side-mounted charging port, and four Wi-Fi antennas for faster throughput.

The lack of wireless charging is noted, but it's hard to complain when there's so much here. We don't have pricing details yet, but expect the ROG Phone 2 to be expensive — the original ROG Phone started at $899, and that's before buying any of the optional accessories.
