"DO YOU WANT A TACO? C'MON, YOU KNOW YOU WANT A TACO! FREE TACOS!" blared a T-Mobile employee through a megaphone at passersby in New York City's Times Square. Based on what I saw over the span of about 90 minutes at T-Mobile's flagship store, yes indeed, people wanted tacos.
A constant line of about 40 people curled around the corner on Broadway and ran a short length down 46th Street. Upon entering the T-MoBell store, employees handed taco seekers some swag and let them take a selfie in front of a branded backdrop.
They could then wander through the store to grab a T-MoBell Freeze — an exclusive drink to T-MoBell events, I was told. I took a sip and can only say it tasted a bit like Cherry Coke.
With T-MoBell Freeze in hand, people were then directed to the taco stand where they could talk possession of a single, delectable taco from none other than Taco Bell.
The store was full of magenta-wearing T-Mobile employees and rocking through the afternoon thanks to the DJs from New York's Z100 radio station. Upon acquiring a taco, most people wandered out with a bemused look on their faces, blending back into the sea of people from which they eddied.
Only in New York City! (Actually, not really. T-Mobile is offering the same experience to folks at its flagship stores in Chicago and Los Angeles. In fact, the T-MoBell event runs Tuesday, July 23 through Thursday, July 25 from 2PM to 5PM local time.)
Each of the locations was also playing host to a celebrity. In New York, MTV's La La Anthony made an appearance. She grabbed a drink, chatted with T-Mobile store employees, and eventually stood for selfies with fans.
T-Mobile has been running a taco Tuesday promotion with Taco Bell since last year and has to-date given customers some 16 million tacos. That's a lot of tacos, my friend.
There's more than just free tacos at stake. T-Mobile customers and non-customers alike have a shot at some prizes. The companies are giving away a year of free tacos, Powerbeats Pro Wireless headphones, Ultimate Ears Megaboom 3 speakers, and more. Just follow T-Mobile on Twitter for the details.
Now if you'll excuse me, there's a los locos taco waiting with my name on it.
