European launch also delayed as Samsung tackles defective batteries.
Following reports of explosions due to defective batteries in some units, Samsung has announced a global recall of Galaxy Note 7 handsets, according to CNN.
A statement given to Korea's Yonhap news agency indicates that the hardware issue affects less than 0.1% of all Note 7 devices sold. Gizmodo Australia reports that 1 million Note 7s will be recalled around the world.
The recall will also delay the coming European launch of the Galaxy Note 7, which had been slated for September 2. According to Samsung's German Twitter account, the Note 7 launch will not go ahead as planned, but will be held back to some future date.
That's a blow to Samsung, as the delay could push the Note's launch past the iPhone 7 launch, expected later in September. That's aside from the wider publicity hit it's sure to take with any safety-related recall of a high-profile product.
We'll update this post with more information as it becomes available.
