Google’s mysterious puzzle reveals this year’s I/O location and dates

Google's puzzle has been solved, revealing that this year's I/O will take place on May 17th-19th at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. And those who solved it will reportedly receive tickets to Google I/O!

Yesterday, Google tweeted a cryptic message containing seemingly random numbers. The tweet also had a link to a website called 'Save the Date,' where you can read Google's instructions:

  • 5 puzzles. Each gets more difficult.
  • 5 clues. Take notes. Each puzzle is gone after it's solved.
  • 5 places. Think numbers.
  • Enter all answers at savethedate.foo.
  • You must know where you've been to get where you're going.

Now, the puzzle has been solved, and now we know the exact location and dates for this year's Google I/O. Just as we reported, it will indeed start on the 17th and go on until the 19th, but at the Shoreline Amphitheatre, presumably due to size constraints.

Want to know how to solve the puzzle? Here is an explanation by Keshav Chawla on 9to5Google:

Round 1: The longitude and latitude numbers can be found in the JavaScript file it links to.

Round 2: The unlisted Youtube video is wuite [sic] confusing unless you turn on captions and copy it down word for word. Then take the amount letters in the word and divide by number of words. Keep the punctuation like periods and commas for the longitude and latitude.

Round 3: You will hear a set of ASCII Bit 7 code it's as simple as decoding it.

Round 4: The corrupted picture provided contains hexadecimals which can be layed out as a grid and if you work backwards in a certin [sic] order it will give you longitude and latitude.

Round 5: The picture which shows a chessboard with some squares marked in with additional and subtraction numbers (+10 or -5 etc) is named using 64 bit code by decoding this it gives you the code "where have you been" hinting to you to fill in the country names in the chess board in order. Then eliminate the letters on the squares on the board with out [sic] the numbers that tell you to add or subtract. Whatever letters is left shift that number by that much (B +10 would mean L). The code in the end spells out shoreline amphitheater which is the venue for google I/O this year.

Pretty easy, eh? It looks like those who solved the puzzle early are getting contacted by Google for free tickets to I/O, and as jealous as I may be, I honestly would not have been able to solve it, so…

What do you think Google will have in store for us at this year's I/O? Let us know in the comments below!
