Ghost in the Shell, the cyberpunk Japanese manga comic that was turned into a popular anime movie in 1995, is coming back as a live-action feature film this week. At the same time, a VR experience based on the movie version of Ghost in the Shell will also be released on Friday, March 31 for the Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR headsets.
Details about this VR experience have yet to be revealed, but a brief 360 degree trailer posted on Facebook shows a rooftop located in the unnamed Japanese city in the movie's version of 2029. We would expect that the VR version will feature the central character of the film, The Major, played by Scarlett Johansson. She's a cyborg who is trying to take out terrorists, but finds out she may be fighting on the wrong side.
It looks like Oculus and Facebook have some kind of exclusive on this content, so we would not expect it to show up on other platforms like the HTC Vive or PlayStation VR. No price for the Ghost in the Shell VR experience has been revealed. Hopefully it will be a good one, as the movie version is already getting some mixed reviews ahead of its full release.
