Is Doogee gearing up to release a curved smartphone like the LG G Flex?

The LG G Flex 2 was a successful device in a lot of ways. It was the first major phone to utilize Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 chip, it came with a wicked fire engine red color variant (and long before the solar red HTC U11 appeared), and it had a unique design thanks to its curved display. Disappointingly for some, it was the last G Flex device LG made, and instead curved edge devices like the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus have since taken over.

Chinese manufacturer Doogee may be bringing the G Flex approach back, however, as suggested by leaker Evan Blass on Twitter. Blass tweeted an image of what could be the new Doogee display panel yesterday, and also hinted that the Doogee device may come with an 18.5:9 aspect ratio, and include 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB storage.

Doogee has already proved that it's willing to try new display formats recently, having rolled out the Doogee Mix earlier this year. That device introduced a bezel-less display design at a rock-bottom price — perhaps Doogee wants to achieve a similarly low price tag with a curved device in 2018?

While I like this idea, curved displays don't really offer a strong benefit on smartphones. Some say they are more "immersive," but I think it's a myth. I understand the notion with regards to giant displays that completely surround you, but the perceivable width and depth of a circa 5.5-inch smartphone is negligible. And that curve won't improve anything in portrait mode — I'd be interested more in what the phone will look like design-wise rather than what the display will offer to look at.
