  • Leaked images of a new smartwatch from Fitbit depict a stylish device, smaller and more colorful than the Fitbit Ionic.
  • During a call with investors, Fitbit claimed the upcoming smartwatch would have "mass appeal" and designed with female consumers in mind.
  • Pricing and release date are not known, but the source of the images claims to know some software and hardware specs.

On Monday, smart wearable manufacturer Fitbit had a conference call with investors in which it hinted that the company would release a new smartwatch with "mass appeal" sometime this year. Now, less than 48 hours later, we have images that reportedly show the new device. Could it be the Fitbit Blaze 2?

During the investor call, Fitbit did have disappointing news about the Fitbit Ionic, namely that it is underperforming as far as sales go. With that in mind, a lot will be riding on this new smartwatch, whatever it might be called.

From the photos, the upcoming smartwatch appears to be smaller than the Ionic, which would line up with Fitbit's reported desire to market more to the female consumer. The new watch also comes in many different colors, both the band and along the face of the watch itself. It looks like the watch comes in black, silver, gray, and rose gold face options, with all sorts of different band colors and textures.

With a smaller form factor and plenty of color options, it appears this watch is the "mass appeal" concept the company is going for.

Other than what the watch looks like, we don't know too much else about it. We heard rumors last year that Fitbit was working on a new entry in the Blaze line, so this watch being branded as the Blaze 2 would make sense. However, if the Ionic is not doing so well, the company might want to rebrand the latest product entirely to shake off that bad mojo.

The new watch won't stray too far from the Ionic in one respect, and that's software. The new smartwatch will run the same Fitbit OS that first appeared in the Ionic, although it may be completely reworked as part of the company's new strategy. At this point, we can only guess.

Wareable, the site that leaked the images in this article, says that the new watch will be water resistant up to 50 meters (164 feet), have SpO2 sensors to detect sleep apnea, and won't come with a built-in GPS. The site also says the smartwatch will come at a lower price point than the Ionic, which listed at $300. However, none of this is truly confirmed until Fitbit officially announces the device sometime this spring.

What do you think? Are you in the market for a new smartwatch?
