LG wants you to tell it how much you hate the notch

LG G7 Techno Buffalo

  • LG posted on Reddit asking Android fans to tell the company how they feel about the display notch.
  • The post claims that LG will present the comments to the R&D team at the company.
  • LG's next smartphone should presumably be designed and ready, but maybe it is changing its mind… again.

LG recently posted on Reddit in /r/Android asking redditors what they think of the notch — the cutout at the top of smartphone displays that's all the rage right now. The thread is open and already has over 300 comments, so if you've ever wanted to let a company know how much you hate (or like) the notch, now's your chance.

Whether this post is a response to the backlash OnePlus just received when it announced the upcoming OnePlus 6 would have a notch is not clear. However, it does seem like peculiar timing since, theoretically anyway, LG's next flagship device "Judy" should already be well past the point of no return when it comes to its design.

But then again, maybe LG is just looking for opinions for the fun of it. Here is the Reddit post in full, so you can decide for yourself where LG is coming from:

We've seen a LOT of comments around "The Notch" over the past few weeks, from people who love the quick access to the menu to those that hate the wasted screen space. We would love to gather some more feedback to share with our R&D team- and this is where you come in. So…what do you think? Love the Notch? Or is it Notch your thing?

I don't know how a notch gives "quick access to the menu" in any way that a traditional status bar doesn't also do, so that's a bit strange. But the post clearly states that LG is going to share the Reddit comments with its research and development team, so maybe LG is seriously considering scrapping the leaked "Lucy" designs (which feature a notch) and giving the hardcore Android fans what they want.

LG turned a lot of heads earlier this year when it announced that it was scrapping its original plans for its follow-up to the LG G6 and that it would no longer adhere to the traditional smartphone release schedule. So it's not exactly out of the question to think that LG could drastically change or even re-scrap its plans for "Judy."

If you aren't on Reddit (why not?!), feel free to tell us how you feel about the notch in the comments below.
