Original story – June 14, 2018: Back in February 2017, developer Com2us and publisher Activision announced plans to launch a series of games based on the long-running Skylanders console series for mobile devices. Today, Com2us started an open beta test for the first such game, Skylanders: Ring of Heroes. It's now available for Android phones on the Google Play Store.
The mobile game is a turn-based RPG, where players take on the role of Portal Master. They will be tasked to find and collect from among the over 60 Skylanders creatures that are available in the game, and make them work in teams to battle other opponents. The creatures can also be made to evolve in order to gain new abilities and skills.
This represents a bit of a reboot of the Skylanders franchise. Activision first launched the series for consoles in 2011, offering a simple action game that also required the use of real-world collectible toy figures that turned into playable characters. Skylanders became a massive hit, and spawned similar titles such as Lego Dimensions and Disney Infinity. However, that trend, aimed at younger gamers, came to a halt just a few years later. Activision has not released a new console Skylanders game since late 2016, and both Lego Dimensions and Disney Infinity have also ended their runs.
The open beta of Skylanders: Ring of Heroes will be available for Android until June 25. The developer recommends that the game run on devices with at least 2GB of RAM and at least Android 4.3 or above. The final version of the game will be released sometime in the third quarter of 2018.
