AirPods 2? Forget about it. The AirPods 3 may launch by the end of this year

The new AirPods wireless charging case has the same dimensions as the first-generation standard case.

According to DigiTimes, we could see the Apple AirPods 3 before the end of 2019. Apple's purported third-generation true-wireless earbuds will include noise cancelling, pitting them directly against the likes of the Sony WF-SP700N. Inventec and Luxshare Precision will likely be the predominant manufacturers of the AirPods 3.

Before stoking the rumor flames too much, let's bear in mind how DigiTimes reported AirPower would launch in late March, just days before Apple officially nixed the wireless charging mat. Suffice to say, we take the rumor with a grain of salt. That said, 9to5Mac reports analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF Industries expects Apple will launch two more AirPods models at the end of 2019 and first quarter of 2020.

One update will have the famed stemmed aesthetic while the other — likely the 2020 model — will feature an overhauled design. While Kuo doesn't share further information, we may speculate that noise cancelling and water-resistance are in the works.

Accordingly, the iterative update will maintain the same pricing that we've seen with the AirPods 2. However, it's not yet understood if Kuo means the base price will remain $159 with a $199 bundled option or that he's implying the Q4 2019 AirPods will be $159 and the overhauled 2020 model will be $199.
