Here's your daily tech digest, by way of the DGiT Daily newsletter, for Monday, June 24, 2019!
1. The next Raspberry Pi is here: still $35, more awesome
The geek world is excited, and quite fairly: the Raspberry Pi 4 is here, and it brings many new exciting upgrades for tinkers, hobbyists, and first-timers wanting an inexpensive way to try things that they didn't expect.
First, the news:
- The latest Raspberry Pi sees a bunch of upgrades over the last Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+.
- The list is impressive and culminates in claims of three-times the performance.
- The 4.0 model now packs USB 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet, WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, up to 4GB RAM of higher-spec RAM, and up to two 4K outputs at 60 frames per second.
- Probably the biggest impact will be via four Cortex-A72 CPU cores, a big step up from the Model B+, which offered power-sipping Cortex-A53 CPU cores.
- The board is now powered via USB-C connectivity, with an official USB-C power supply shipping for an extra $8.

What it means:
- The Pi was originally invented as an educational product by a charity, the Raspberry Pi Foundation.
- But thanks to industrious hackers and hobbyists, along with the Linux distribution OSMC, the Raspberry Pi is commonly used in a variety of ways, including as a media center for playing films, music, TV, programming, and much much more.
- Of course, it's not the only option – Nvidia's Jetson Nano had taken up a preferred position by many tinkerers, so the new upgrade does make a significant difference.
- The addition of more RAM should be a game changer as well.
