Vivo touts 120 watt fast charging: Charge a 4,000mAh battery in 13 minutes

Vivo V11 Pro

Oppo and Huawei stood out last year thanks to their super-fast charging technology, but Vivo thinks it can do much better than that.

The company took to Weibo to reveal that it's working on 120 watt fast charging technology. That's three times faster than Huawei's 40 watt charging, which charges the Mate 20 Pro and P30 Pro in just over an hour. It's also more than twice as fast as Oppo's Super VOOC charging, which promises to hit a maximum speed of 50 watts.

More specifically, Vivo says its 120 watt fast charging tech is able to charge a phone with a 4,000mAh battery in just 13 minutes. So a compatible phone will be fully charged well before almost every other device on the market has hit the 50 percent mark.

Editor's Pick

Vivo hasn't revealed any details regarding a release timeline, so it's likely still months away from commercial availability at best. The firm did use a "Vivo 5G" hashtag on the Weibo post though, suggesting that we'll see it on an upcoming 5G device.

It isn't the only company working on super-fast charging though, as Xiaomi demonstrated 100 watt fast charging earlier this year too. A video by the company shows a phone with a 4,000mAh battery hitting 100 percent in 17 minutes. In other words, it looks like ultra-fast charging could be one of the defining trends of 2020.
