1. Point Break (1991)
Forget the more recent, and awful, 2015 remake. The original 1991 Point Break is the quintessential 1990s action film. It stars Keanu Reeves as the young FBI agent who infiltrates the surfing community in Los Angeles in the hopes of finding a group of bank robbers who he thinks hides among the surfers. Patrick Swayze is excellent as Reaves' nemesis, the leader of the surfing gang who (minor spoiler alert) is discovered to be the main man behind the crime spree. There are tons of iconic action movie moments in Point Break, and while the premise is a little unlikely, it's still a lot of fun to watch.
2. Elf
Here's a movie to get you in the holiday spirit a few months ahead of time. This 2003 comedy stars Will Ferrell as Buddy, a human who was found by Santa Claus' elves at the North Pole as a baby. Now Buddy is all grown up and has to venture outside the toy workshop for the first time to find his real mother and father. There are some truly classic funny bits in this movie, but there's also a lot of heart in Elf as well. That's due to both Ferrell's performance as Buddy, as well as the efforts of the movie's director Jon Favreau.
3. Gravity
One of the best free Vudu movies at the moment is also one of the best space movies in recent years. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney play astronauts working outside a space station when an accident threatens their lives. Be prepared for some major shocks as Bullock and Clooney race against time, the lack of oxygen, and yes, the forces of gravity in order to stay alive.
4. The Big Short
Here's another free Vudu movie with an all-star cast of actors. Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Steve Carell, and Ryan Gosling head up this docudrama about a small number of investors who predict the massive housing bubble in 2006. The film shows how they tried to short the mortgage market to make money, even as the housing bubble burst and threatened to take down the US economy. It might sound dull, but these actors, along with director Adam McKay, manage to make this story of numbers and mortgage trades thoroughly entertaining, as well as thought-provoking. Look for a couple of unexpected cameos as well.
5. The Iron Giant
A film that was a massive financial bomb when it was released in theaters in 1999 has since become one of the most acclaimed animated movies of all time. The storyline is simple: In the 1950's, a giant alien robot crash lands on Earth and is found and befriended by a 12-year old boy. It's up to this boy to keep his new 50-foot tall friend safe from a government agent who wants to destroy what he thinks is an alien threat. Even with that simple plot, there's a lot of complexity in The Iron Giant, combined with a ton of love as well. It's one of the best family movies ever made.
6. The Exorcist
Nowadays horror films routinely become big critical and box office hits, but The Exorcist helped lead the way way back in 1973. It's about a pair of Catholic priests who try to rid a 12-year old girl of a demon possessing her body. Director William Friedkin was never better than when he made this movie, which frightened audiences back then and can still do the same over 40 years later. There are several sequels to The Exorcist, but you can safely ignore them. Just watch one of the best horror movies of all time, and one of the best free Vudu movies.
7. Patriot Games
Harrison Ford stars in the first of two movies as CIA analyst Jack Ryan in this 1992 thriller. Ryan, while vacationing with his wife and daughter in London, manages to foil a rogue IRA assassination attempt on a member of the British royal family. Ryan kills one of those assassins, and now the assassin's brother, played by Sean Bean, wants revenge on him and his family. There's some cool action in this movie, including a final showdown that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
8. Deep Blue Sea
While no shark movie has yet to top the original 1975 Jaws, Deep Blue Sea comes the closest. This 1999 film tells the story of scientists at an aquatic research base who are trying to increase the intelligence of sharks in order to find a cure for Alzheimer's Disease. Of course, messing with nature never turns out well, and the sharks become way too intelligent. Pure chaos erupts at the base as the researchers now have to deal with the perfect killing machine that is also hyper-intelligent. Oh, and Deep Blue Sea may have one of the most shocking movie moments in history.
9. The Fifth Element
This 1997 space epic didn't get a lot of love from either the critics or moviegoers at first, but The Fifth Element has since become a cult classic thanks to a number of, well, elements. First of all the visual effects are excellent, and still hold up today. On top of that the performances of many of the actors, including Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, Gary Oldman, and Chris Tucker are absolutely stellar. The story doesn't make a lot of sense and it's a bit goofy to watch at times, but that's part of the film's charm as it doesn't take itself too seriously.
10. Blade
Several years before the rush to make every Marvel superhero into a movie or TV show started, this small 1998 movie about a third-rate Marvel character hit theaters. Blade works very well, and it's mostly due to Wesley Snipes, who combines both his solid acting ability and his martial arts skills to portray the "Daywalker" Blade. His mission is to hunt and kill vampires, thanks to the belief that his mother was killed by one just as he was being born. As Blade will soon see, this belief is about to come crashing down on him, even as the vampire forces, lead by Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff), plan to bring a vampire god to Earth.
