Call of Duty: Mobile: Everything you need to know (Out now!)

Call of Duty: Mobile is the latest mobile-focused entry in the all-conquering series, and it's finally available on the Play Store! Here's everything we know about CoD Mobile so far!

What is Call of Duty: Mobile?

Call of Duty: Mobile is a multiplayer shooter just like the rest of the franchise. The difference is that this mobile game is free-to-play. So far, the game seems nigh-on identical to Call of Duty: Legends of War, a Tencent-developed game that soft-launched in alpha late last year. But the Legends of War tagline has obviously been dropped in favor of the Mobile moniker.

Users can play in several of the multiplayer games modes they have come to love from other Call of Duty games, including Team Deathmatch, Search and Destroy, Domination, Free-For-All, Frontline, Hardpoint, and even Battle Royale. More modes, content, and events will be released on a regular basis. It's available for both Android and iOS.

Out of the box, users are able to play Frontline, Team Deathmatch, and Practice versus AI. Domination and Search and Destroy are unlocked when you reach level five. Want to play Battle Royale? Then you'll need to wait until you hit level seven.

When is the Call of Duty: Mobile release date?

The official Call of Duty: Mobile launch date is today (October 1, 2019).

Is it free?

Call of Duty: Mobile is free-to-play, although it uses CP virtual currency to buy items. In Europe, the cost to buy this virtual currency ranges from €1.09 to €109.99. Items available for sale include skinned weapons, loot crates, vehicles, weapon XP cards, and other items.

The company has also launched a Premium Pass option, and purchasing this entitles users to more CP virtual currency and item rewards. We'll need more time with the game to figure out if the virtual currency and Premium Pass offerings end up making it a pay-to-win experience.

Activision is also enticing people to play often by offering daily login bonuses such as special items, weapon XP cards, and other goodies. Finally, the publisher also lets users watch video ads in exchange for goodies.

What is Call of Duty: Mobile gameplay like?

It looks like the game will feature 60fps gameplay, the aforementioned multiplayer modes, and several classic Call of Duty maps like Nuketown, Crash, Hijacked, Crossfire, Standoff, Killhouse, and Firing Range. You will also be able to play as many iconic characters from the franchise, such as Price and Ghost.

Call of Duty: Mobile's Battle Royale mode will work as expected with a few welcome additions. The mode supports up to 100 players in single, two-person, or four-person teams who will fight in maps designed exclusively for the game. Players will fight as one of several different classes including Defender, Mechanic, Scout, Clown, Medic, and Ninja. Maps pit players against one another across land, sea, and air with ATVs, helicopters, and tactical rafts.

Of course, the game will feature touch controls since it is a mobile game, but we aren't sure if it will also launch with controller support. Overall the game's performance and various game modes all look very promising.

For what it's worth, it seems like Call of Duty: Mobile uses bots for the first few games (at least in our first few matches thus far). This isn't unheard of, as the likes of PUBG and other mobile titles do this as well.

How configurable is it?

Activision previously released information about the game's settings and loadouts. The settings are quite configurable, allowing players to choose things like aim sensitivity, pick and fine-tune the gyroscope function for aiming, toggle sprint to always-on, and tweak the camera field-of-vision.

The game also offers two modes: simple and advanced. Simple mode auto-fires at enemies when the reticle is focused on them, while advanced requires the player to manually fire. Advanced mode also lets the player choose how to hold different weapon types and customize the HUD.

Loadouts are also configurable in Call of Duty: Mobile. Players can pick a primary and secondary weapon, skins for each of their weapons, and explosive or tactical grenades. There are also weapon skills and upgrades like in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and up to three perks can be chosen for each loadout. Players can also level up their weapons as they play with each one.

Can I play CoD Mobile with my friends online?

One of the biggest draws to the Call of Duty franchise in the past has been the multiplayer online gameplay. Call of Duty: Mobile is no different, and players can compete alongside or against friends and strangers from all over the world. At this point, we aren't sure if Android and iOS versions will support crossplay or if players will be matched up with people on the same platform.

What is the leveling system like?

As well as weapon skills, we know that CoD Mobile adopts many elements from other games in the franchise. It will feature scorestreaks instead of killstreaks which give players in-game access to tools like the Recon Car, UAV, Air Supply Drop, hunter drones, and VTOL. The franchise has had pretty robust leveling systems in the past, so as long as the game isn't pay-to-win, we have high hopes for this one too.

Is it available in my country?

Call of Duty: Mobile launches worldwide, excluding Mainland China, Vietnam, and Belgium. As of October 1 (3AM ET) Android Authority writers in Germany, India, South Africa, Spain, and the UK report that they're able to download it. So it looks like this isn't a staggered rollout by any means.
