Motorola Razr: Price and release date (Update: Preorders open in the UK)

Update: January 24, 2020 (11:35 AM ET): Thanks to Gizmodo, we now know the Motorola Razr is officially available for preorder from UK carrier EE. Unfortunately, the device price is through the roof, and financing options range from £2,356 (~$3,080) to £2,766 (~$3,615).

There are eight more confusing plans that fall somewhere between those two prices. Each of them requires around £100 (~$130) in monthly payments, but they need different down payments and offer varying mobile plans. Needless to say, none of these options are cheap, so, you better be willing to fork out the big bucks to get your hands on Motorola's foldable throwback.

EE also doesn't provide an official release date for the device. It only says customers can "expect despatch within 28 days to you or your local EE store," meaning you'll hopefully get the device by the end of February.

In the US, Motorola says preorders will commence January 26 at Verizon Wireless, Walmart, and Motorola.com. It will reach stores February 6. Motorola says availability for other regions will be announced on a per-market basis.

Update: December 20, 2019 (02:15 PM ET): United States pre-orders for the foldable Motorola Razr were scheduled to open on December 26, 2019, but Motorola just announced a delay for that date (via The Verge). The reasoning for the delay is high demand, which Motorola referred to as having "quickly outgrown supply predictions." The Motorola Razr price does not appear to be affected.

It previously announced general in-store availability in the US beginning on January 9, 2020, but that date was also delayed. Motorola did not give any indication as to when we can expect pre-orders to open now, but did say that it does not "anticipate a significant shift from our original availability timeline."

Original article, November 13, 2019 (11:16 AM ET): Motorola took the wraps off its very first foldable device this week: the Motorola Razr! The new smartphone joins the very limited selection of foldable devices launched this year, including the Samsung Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate X. However, the Motorola Razr price is much lower than those phones.

That doesn't mean that the Razr is cheap! On the contrary, this is still a very expensive device, especially when you consider it has a much weaker spec sheet than the Mate X or the Galaxy Fold. Still, the design of the device is much different than those foldables and might be the practical product that will get people interested in the foldable future.

Motorola Razr release date

Motorola formally launched the Razr at an event in Los Angeles on November 13, 2019. The device looks just like the Razr phones from the early 2000s — in fact, folded in half, the device is as thin as the very first Razr phone from 2004.

Motorola is continuing its partnership with Verizon and offering the Razr as an exclusive on that carrier. Pre-orders for the Razr were scheduled to open on December 26, 2019, but Motorola later delayed that date due to high demand. It previously announced a general in-store availability beginning on January 9, 2020, but that date was also delayed.

Motorola did not give any further details on when the phone will once again be scheduled for pre-orders and release.

While it's likely the device will eventually be available as an unlocked model, keep in mind that only Verizon customers will have access to the device in the United States at first.

Motorola Razr price and availability

On Verizon in the US, the Motorola Razr price will be $1,500. You can either pay for the device outright or sign up for a payment plan and pay $62.49 per month for the next 24 months.

That price is a little lower than the Samsung Galaxy Fold, which starts at $1,980. It's also significantly cheaper than the Huawei Mate X, which starts at €2,299 (~$2,529). However, since there's just a Snapdragon 710 on board with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, one wonders why the company couldn't make the Motorola Razr price even lower than $1,500.

The device was scheduled to hit the US first on January 9, 2020, but that date was pushed back to an unknown time due to high demand. The Motorola Razr will also be coming to the UK through an exclusive partnership with EE. The UK price and a firm release date yet in the region have yet to be confirmed, but prospective buyers can register their interest here.

Canada will see the Razr at some point in 2020.

The company has also confirmed that the Razr will be "coming soon" to India, although it didn't disclose pricing or a specific launch date. You can register for more details via Motorola's link over here.

Motorola says the Razr will also land in Europe at some point in 2020 but didn't disclose an exact date. We did hear unconfirmed reports that the device will cost €1,599 (~$1,771) throughout the European region, but that could be incorrect or change between now and the launch.

Pricing and launch dates for Latin America, Asia, and Australia are also unconfirmed, although Motorola did confirm the device will hit those countries at some point.
