Disney Plus prices and trial 2

Update: February 24, 2020: Disney Plus is offering a £10/€10 discount on a full year subscription to the service in UK and Europe. We've updated this article to reflect the new pre-order offer for the aforementioned regions.

Disney announced well over a year ago that the company plans to launch its own streaming service. It would compete directly with services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video and upcoming ventures like Apple's streaming TV launch. Now we know what the Disney streaming service will be called: Disney Plus (or Disney+, as the company officially brands it). Its official logo shows that Disney Plus will link up organically with the rest of its properties. The service is now available in three countries, with more to be added later.

Disney is wasting no time in creating new content for the streaming service. Disney Plus is the home for lots of exclusive movies and TV series. That includes new Pixar, Marvel Studios and Star Wars content. We will go over everything we know about the Disney streaming service. We will update this post with new information as it is revealed.

What is Disney Plus?

That includes its main Disney brand, its Pixar animated movies, its Marvel Studios and Star Wars properties, and National Geographic. The service will also have content from its recent acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

Here's how to sign up for Disney Plus

As we mentioned, the service is now available to pre-order for US customers. Here's how to handle the Disney Plus sign up process:

  1. Go to the Disney Plus web site on your browser. You will see two subscription choices. One is for $6.99 a month, while the other is for $69.99 for an annual subscription. Both offer users a seven-day free trial. Even if you sign up now,  November 12, your credit or debit card won't be charged until November 19. Of course, you can cancel your subscription before that trial period ends and not pay anything.
  2. You will then asked to type in the email address you want to use for your Disney Plus account. There's also a checkbox that will send more info about company news and offers. You can uncheck that box if you don't want to get more emails in your inbox. However, you will have to agree to the company's Privacy Policy and Subscriber Agreement. Then, you can tap on the "Agree & Continue" box for the next phase of the Disney Plus sign up process.
  3. Next, you type in your personal password for your account. It must be at least six characters long. It must also have at least one number and one special character. Once you have typed that in, tap on "Continue".
  4. Now it's time to put in your payment information. You can either put in your credit/debit card info, or you can use a PayPay account. There's also the option to enable a checkbox so that the payment info can be used across all of the Disney properties. Once you have filled out the payment info, tap on the "Agree & Continue" box for the next phase of the Disney Plus sign up process.
  5. That's it. You are done with the Disney Plus sign up procedure.

What platforms and devices support Disney Plus?

Disney Plus is available on a wide variety of platforms devices. Here's a list of what's been confirmed:

The company has not confirmed Disney Plus support for the Nintendo Switch console. However, an early promo slide for the service did show Disney Plus running on that device. It's possible it will be added in the future.

Disney Plus interface and features

The Disney Plus app and UI include special sections for Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic brands There will also be sections in the interface so users can see all of the service's movies, TV shows, and original content. It recently added a "Continue Watching" section so users can see which movies and shows they stopped watching in the middle, so they can quickly resume them.

Users will be able to create up to seven custom individual profiles. Kids can see the shows and movies they are interested in, while their older parents can see their preferred content.

Disney Plus will also feature 4K streaming for movies and TV shows that support it. The service will support streaming for up to 10 devices at once, with up to four concurrent streams at once. The smartphone and tablet apps will include support for downloading content as well. That means users can watch movies and shows offline for as long as they subscribe to the service. Some movies and TV shows will have DVD-like commentaries and extras.

Disney Plus also has a Kids Mode. It includes parental controls so moms and days can keep their sons and daughters from seeing content that's out of their age group.

Will Disney Plus have ads?

According to a new report on The Verge, there will be ads for the cable TV service Starz. However, they will only be seen on the login page for the Android app and on web browsers. Once you get past the login page, the Disney Plus service will be ad-free.

So why is there going to be a login screen ad from Starz in the first place? The Verge states it was part of a deal to get certain movies as Disney Plus launch titles that were previously licensed to Starz.

What older movies and TV shows does the service have?

Disney Plus will have access to hundreds of movies and TV shows from its 90 years of content. As we mentioned, that includes all those great animated films and live-action movies from the Disney brand. Movies and shows  from Mickey Mouse to Snow White to Beauty and the Beast to Frozen and tons more are on the service. All of the Pixar and Star Wars films will be available on Disney Plus within the first year of its launch. It also includes the majority of the Marvel Studios superhero movies. It also includes TV shows from the National Geographic Channel. Classic content from The Disney Channel is also available on Disney Plus. That includes shows like Duck Tales to Hannah Montana, with thousands of episodes and over 100 movies.

Because of a current contract with Netflix, the most recent films from the studio, such as Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War and A Wrinkle in Time, have made their streaming debuts on that service. Those films will make their way to Disney Plus in the next couple of years.

Disney Plus also has a number of family-themed TV shows and movies from its recent Fox purchase. That includes The Simpsons, with all 30 seasons available from day one on the service.

What about all of that Fox content and Hulu?

disney+ fox combination availability

As mentioned, Disney has now acquired much of the content of 21st Century Fox. That means Disney will have the movie and TV rights to franchises like Aliens, Predator, Planet of the Apes, and the X-Men-Deadpool Marvel Comics characters. However, Disney Plus will launch for a family audience, which means that much of Fox's franchises, which are made for an older audience, won't show up on the Disney streaming service.

However, in a recent investors call, Disney CEO Bob Iger stated that a number of former Fox franchises will be rebooted in some way for Disney Plus. Specific movie franchises that were mentioned included Home Alone, Night at the Museum, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Cheaper by the Dozen.

hulu

The good news for Disney is that it now effectively controls all of Hulu. It originally owned 30 percent, and then it bought the 30 percent share once owned by Fox. Recently, it made a deal with Comcast to buy the remaining interest it has in Hulu in about five years, but Comcast also agreed to give operational control of the service to Disney.  Hulu currently has about 20 million subscribers. Disney has indicated that it could offer content of the properties that it bought in the Fox deal on Hulu, rather than on Disney Plus.

That's all we currently know about Disney Plus. What do you think of the Disney streaming service as it now stands, and do you plan to sign up for it when it launches?
