Samsung has finally announced the long-awaited Galaxy Z Flip. One of the device's most unique features is "Flex mode," which allows users to split apps between the top and bottom of the device when partially folded. Google says this feature might not be a Galaxy Z Flip exclusive for too much longer.
According to The Verge, Samsung worked with Google to design Flex mode, and Google claims other OEMs will be able to build it into their own devices in the future. Keep in mind, Flex mode functions differently than split-screen multitasking, so this isn't a reimplementation of an older feature. Instead, Flex mode splits the device's screen into two smaller segments that display different pieces of functionality in a given app.

For example, you can view pictures or videos on the top half of the display and control them on the bottom half. So, in the YouTube app, you can watch a video on the top portion of the screen while reading comments and searching for more content at the bottom. Flex mode should offer similar functionality in other apps like Google Duo, the messages app, and the camera app.
Right now, we don't have many other examples of what Flex mode is truly capable of. Still, we are excited to see how other manufacturers and developers could implement this functionality in the future.
Unfortunately, it may be awhile before we see any other devices come with this functionality out of the box. Until then, the Galaxy Z Flip will be the first smartphone that supports Flex mode, so you'll probably need to get your hands on that device after pre-orders open February 14 to try it out.
