Google Messages app deleting texts for some users

The Google Messages app has become the preferred texting app for loads of people around the world, but it seems like some users are reporting a rather serious bug.

Users on Google's Messages support forum have noted that their text messages are disappearing with no explanation (thanks to Android Authority reader Michael!). The thread dates back to January 2019, but users have posted complaints as recently as this month.

Users report seeing glitched text, messages from some contacts incorrectly labelled as coming from another contact, and the app crashing before losing all text messages.

Suggested solutions include a factory reset and data restore, switching to a different text app, uninstalling Messages via the Play Store (therefore reverting to the pre-installed version), and clearing the app cache/storage. But it seems like each solution has a varying chance of success.

It's also worth noting that the issue isn't restricted to a specific phone, although the Moto G7 series seems to pop up a lot. Other devices affected by the Google Messages bug include the HTC One, Huawei P20 series, LG G8s, Moto G5 Plus, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, and Pixel 3.

This isn't the first time we've seen disappearing texts in the Messages app, as some Pixel 3 owners previously suffered from this issue in 2018. Hopefully this is a similar issue and Google is working on a fix, but it's been over a year since the problem was first reported.

We've contacted Google for comment on the Google Messages bug and will update the story if/when they get back to us. Have you noticed this problem? Then give us the details (i.e. device model and market) in the comments below.
