Original article: Towards the end of 2019, Xiaomi sub-brand Redmi launched the Redmi K30. The 4G version of the device hit stores not long afterward, while the 5G variant entered the pre-order stage in early January. Now, all eyes are on the next iteration in the series: the Redmi K30 Pro.
Unlike last year's K20 series, we expect the Redmi K30 Pro to be a lot different from the vanilla K30 with a new design, some beefed-up specs, and a few new features. We also expect the price to be higher, but we don't expect it to reach into "normal" flagship territory as far as that goes.
Besides the Redmi K30 Pro, the company is also expected to announce a device called the Redmi K30 Pro Zoom Edition.

Redmi K30 Pro: Name and release date
At first, things were up in the air as far as naming goes for the Redmi K30 Pro. However, on February 25 Redmi confirmed the name with an image posted to Chinese microblogging site Weibo. It will, in fact, be called the Redmi K30 Pro.

The company also announced the launch date for the K30 Pro through its official Weibo account on March 17. The smartphone will launch in China on March 24. Redmi has confirmed that it'll host an online live broadcast for the launch of the phone.
Redmi K30 Pro Zoom Edition: Name and release date
The first mention of the Redmi K30 Pro Zoom Edition was spotted by an XDA member in early March while combing through the latest MIUI 11 China developer ROM. The name of the phone also appeared in a social media post made by Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing on March 16.
The executive posted on Chinese microblogging website Weibo using a device called the Redmi K30 Pro Zoom Version (according to machine translation). You can spot the name in the screenshot of Weibing's post below.
The name suggests that the Redmi K30 Pro Zoom Edition will feature better zoom capabilities than the standard K30 Pro model. It could possibly feature a telephoto lens which the regular K30 does not possess.
Then again, the K30 Pro could also offer a telephoto camera. If so, the K30 Pro Zoom Edition could bring in a periscope camera, a telephoto sensor, as well as other zoom enhancements.
As of now, we don't know anything else about the Redmi K30 Pro Zoom Edition apart from its name. However, we do expect to learn more about the phone closer to the K30 Pro's launch date.
Redmi K30 Pro: Design
If you hold a Redmi K20 in one hand and a Redmi K20 Pro in the other, you'd likely not be able to tell the differences between them. Both devices have pop-up selfie cameras, the same size body, the same sized display, and even have the same display resolution.
At first, we thought the Redmi K30 Pro would look almost exactly the same as the Redmi K30. However, official images of the phone from Redmi's Weibo account suggest otherwise. Check out the images above and below.
The images above do not show a phone with a cutout in the display to house the selfie camera, which is what we saw on the Redmi K30. Instead, we see a pop-up selfie camera, much like the Redmi K20 Pro.
Apart from the lack of a display cutout, the Redmi K30 Pro will also feature a redesigned camera setup. The back panel of the phone is visible in the images above as well as in the pictures of the two colorways below.
The images show that the K30 Pro will shed the vertically-aligned quad-camera system that we saw on the K30. Instead, we see a circular camera housing with the four rear cameras arranged in a square. The images also confirm green, white, and purple colorways at the very least.
The official images also show a 3.5mm headphone jack at the top of the phone and a USB-C port at the bottom.
Redmi K30 Pro: Specs and features
The K20 and K20 Pro didn't look very different from one another. Under the hood, though, they were very different. The K20 Pro featured some significant spec bumps with its internals, so we expect the Redmi K30 Pro to also see some internal improvements as compared to the K30.
Processor, RAM, and storage
We can now officially confirm that the K30 Pro will come with the latest-and-greatest smartphone processor, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. The K20 Pro came with the then-latest Snapdragon 855 in 2019, so it's logical that the follow-up will see the 2020 version. For the record, the vanilla K30 has a Snapdragon 730G, a slightly upgraded version of the K20's Snapdragon 730.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 vs MediaTek Dimensity 1000 specs: A rivalry renewed
With the SD865 onboard, it should come as little surprise that the Redmi K30 Pro will be 5G-capable. The presence of the SD865 also suggests that there won't be two versions of the K30 Pro. Instead, we'll likely see just one 5G version with no 4G-only variant.
Redmi has also confirmed vapor chamber cooling inside the phone, allowing for better sustained performance when gaming, using the camera, and in general. Otherwise, the brand says you can also expect LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage as well.
It looks like Redmi is also focusing on haptic feedback, as it's confirmed that "4D immersive vibration" is coming via a linear motor. We previously saw this on the Redmi Note 9 Pro series. Check out the announcement below.
Display
Both the K20 and the K20 Pro had Super AMOLED displays, while the K30 has a downgraded IPS LCD. For the Redmi K30 Pro, Xiaomi has confirmed a 60Hz Samsung AMOLED display with HDR 10+ certification. It's interesting that Xiaomi is downgrading the display refresh rate on the K30 Pro since the regular K30 features a 120Hz screen. The company is possibly doing this to keep the price of the phone reasonable. It could also be a way to safeguard battery life.
Another feature the K30 saw "downgraded" as compared to the K20 series is the fingerprint sensor. The K30 has a side-mounted fingerprint sensor while both the K20 and K20 Pro have in-display fingerprint sensors. It's certainly possible that the Redmi K30 Pro will see the return of the in-display sensor.
Battery and charging
In terms of endurance and charging, Digital Chat Station reports that the Pro model will offer a 4,700mAh battery with 33W wired charging. This compares favorably to the Redmi K30's 4,500mAh pack and 27W speeds.
Camera
It sure looks like that the Redmi K30 Pro will feature some camera upgrades compared to the K30. Official images of the phone confirm that it'll pack a 64MP main camera much like the standard K30.
The quad rear camera setup at the back is also confirmed to feature a telephoto sensor, unlike the regular Redmi K30. It'll be capable of 3x optical zoom.
Further, the Redmi K30 Pro will get dual optical image stabilization, a first for Redmi phones. The feature enables taking clearer images and could help improve the quality of zoomed-in shots.
Hopefully, the Snapdragon 865 processor will bring more image quality improvements and the likes of 8K recording.
We don't have specifications of the pop-up selfie camera yet, but it'll get a feature similar to the pop-up shooter on the OnePlus 7 Pro and several other phones. The mechanism uses a built-in custom fall protection spring that'll detect falls and automatically hide itself to protect the sensor from getting damaged.
Miscellaneous
According to a Weibo post from Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing, the Redmi K30 Pro might possibly come with an IP53 rating. This would mean it would be resistant to dust and water. However, it wouldn't be as good as the typical IP68 rating most flagships smartphones receive.
In the end, we think Redmi downgraded some major aspects of the Redmi K30 in order to make sure there would be more of a difference between it and the Redmi K30 Pro. That was likely an issue with the K20 series since the vanilla and Pro variants in that family were so similar.
Redmi K30 Pro: Price and availability
The entry-level version of the Redmi K30 is around $227, so the Pro variant can only be so expensive before it would seem like too much of a different device from the K30.
For the sake of comparison, here are the Indian K20 and K20 Pro prices:

So far, the only credible rumor we've seen so far regarding pricing has come from IT Home. According to its information, the Redmi K30 Pro with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage could start at 3,699 yuan (~$522), and the Redmi K30 Pro Zoom Version with the same configuration could be priced at 3,999 yuan (~$564).
We expected the pricing for the K30 Pro to fall somewhere above the K20 Pro and the K30 5G pricing due to the upgraded chipset, 5G support, and other bumps in value. In fact, Xiaomi's Mi 10 is at least $120 more expensive than the Mi 9, largely due to the Snapdragon 865 chipset. However, whether or not these prices from IT Home pan out or not is anyone's guess.
As far as availability goes, the device will likely be available in China and India. It's possible it could also land in Europe, but it likely would be rebranded as a Xiaomi Mi device, as the K20 Pro was rebranded as the Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro.
