Honor 5C is now up for sale on Flipkart for ₹10,999

After making its debut in India late last month, the Honor 5C is now up for sale in the country. The phone is available exclusively on Flipkart for ₹10,999, with gold, silver, and grey color options listed.

There's a lot to like about the phone, such as its metal build, impressive 16nm Kirin 650 SoC, a fingerprint sensor at the back, and EMUI 4.1 based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Here's what's on offer:

HTC (re)confirms Android 7.0 Nougat is coming to HTC 10, One M9 and One A9

HTC wants to let you know it is still planning to update the HTC 10, HTC One M9 and HTC One A9 to Android 7.0 Nougat. Now that it's officially called that. HTC sent the same tweet a month ago, back when the next version of Android was still known as Android N. Everything is the same, except there's a few more letters after 'N' in the attached image.

The same fine print applies, meaning there's no official timeline, but you can check out our Android 7.0 update page to get a feel for when HTC might roll it out based on past efforts. The fine print also mentions that additional devices might get put on the update list in future, but HTC is wisely not making any promises it can't keep. You know, like 90 day update turnarounds.

HTC's delivery of Android Nougat for its current top-shelf devices will largely depend on when Google seeds the Release Candidate of Android N to its manufacturer partners. Android 7.0 Nougat has been confirmed for a Q3 release though, so it should be in Nexus owners hands by the end of September and with OEMs before that.

HTC is often one of the fastest manufacturers to release updates to its existing devices (at least the high-end ones) and there's no reason this won't continue so it's likely that HTC 10, One A9 and One M9 users will get the update before the end of the year.

Facebook Messenger's 11,000 chatbots are much more interactive

Facebook introduced chatbots on Messenger three months ago, and the search giant has shared today that over 11,000 bots are active on the messaging service. The Messenger Platform has picked up an update that adds a slew of new features to bots, such as a persistent menu that lists a bot's commands, quick replies, ability to respond with GIFs, audio, video, and other files, and a rating system to provide feedback to bot developers.

In a blog post, Facebook detailed the changes:

• People can now provide a star rating and open text feedback for bot developers. Ratings and reviews are currently shared with only the bot developer.
• Quick replies offer a more guided experience for people as they interact with your bot, which helps set expectations on what the bot can do. They include up to ten dynamic buttons that directly align with the most recent message sent by the business - making it easier to have an automated conversation with people.
• Persistent menu: The navigation for your bot with support for up to five actions. This eliminates the need for people to remember text commands and provides a great way to restart the flow or invoke settings. This will help with bot re-engagement and consistency.
• We're launching a secure protocol for businesses to connect their customers' accounts with Messenger accounts, enabling a deeper and more personal experience. People will have to opt in to this experience.
• Get your brand's personality across by sending a variety of content types. You can now send GIFs, audio, video, and other files to people using your bot in Messenger. Videos and audio clips play natively in Messenger.
• People can choose to mute a bot just like they can mute a conversation with their friends and they can also provide a star rating and feedback for bot developers.

Over 23,000 developers have signed up to make bots using the Wit.ai engine, which means that you'll see even more bots making their way to Messenger in the future. Facebook also has a dedicated website that lets businesses and developers learn more about how to build and grow chatbots.

Verizon's Galaxy Tab E 8.0 picks up the Marshmallow update

Verizon has started rolling out the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update to the Galaxy Tab E 8.0. The update increments the firmware version to T377VVRU1BPD6, bringing the latest security patch to the tablet.

Here's what's new, per the changelog:

• Now on Tap anticipates what you need in the moment. With a simple tap, you can get cards with useful information and apps that feed your need to know.
• When your device is at rest, Doze automatically puts it into a sleep state, preserving your battery charge.
• No need to give apps access all the time. Android Marshmallow lets you define what you want to share and when. Turn permissions off at any time, too.

The release notes also mention the deletion of Amazon Music, VZ Navigator, and go90 apps. If you're using the tablet, head into settings to start downloading the update.

Many language specific Google keyboards get Nougat support, theme support, and more

The English alphabet only includes 26 different letters, but for many other languages that are not descendant from Latin, the number of valid characters is much larger. It turns out that this can make creating a keyboard that works well in those languages a bit difficult — imagine having a keyboard with hundreds or thousands of keys and you begin to get the picture. That's why Google has developed dedicated keyboard apps with alternative input methods specifically designed for languages such as Pinyin or Cantonese to make is easier for many (or maybe even most) users around the world to type in their native tongue.

Hackers are making $500k off mobile trojans they deployed, research shows

According to the Cheetah Mobile Security Research Lab, Chinese hackers are making a whopping $500,000 a day from a group of smartphone trojans dubbed "Hummer." In just the first half of 2016, Hummer was being installed on 1.4 million devices a day. In China alone there were around 63,000 being infected on a daily basis. These numbers are staggering, and security researchers are claiming that Hummer could be the largest mobile malware family ever.

Cheetah Mobile estimates that the "developer" could make five cents a download, getting the $500,000 estimate.

Taking a look at the graph, the Hummer infection base has grown significantly since 2015 with its peak being in April of this year.

When a device is infected with the Hummer trojan, it will root the device without the user's consent and and gain root privileges. Hummer may then proceed to pop up ads on the device and install unwanted apps, including malware. Since this trojan buries itself so deep into the system, resetting the phone will not get rid of it.

Cheetah Mobile started looking into where Hummer came from and found some interesting results. The Hummer family used 12 domain names to update the trojan and issue promotion orders. These trojans have as many as 18 different root methods. In a test, a Hummer trojan accessed the network 10,000 times and downloaded over 200 APKs in just a few hours. This used 2 GB of network data in the process.

There are a few ways to deal with Hummer. Cheetah Mobile updated their anti-virus apps to help prevent it from being installed and making itself comfortable. The company also released Stubborn Trojan Killer on the Google Play Store, which will then try to get rid of Hummer for you. You can also reflash your phone if everything else fails, which also isn't too hard.

Malware like Hummer is one of the biggest reasons to avoid installing applications from outside the Google Play Store or sources that are absolutely trustworthy. Third party app stores, even legitimate ones, may lack the stringent security measures that Google deploys to minimize the impact of malware. It's no surprise that mobile malware is rampant especially in China and other countries where alternative app stores – and app piracy – proliferate.

Xiaomi announces MIUI 8 global ROM: public beta July 11, stable by August 16

Public betas are not for everyone. Namely not for those that like a perfectly polished, stable and bug-free Android experience. But if you like to live on the edge and can live with a few teething problems in order to get your hands on the very latest software, then Xiaomi's global ROM, MIUI 8, might just be for you. The first public beta will be available on July 11.

During the launch event for the Xiaomi Mi Max in India, the company announced the MIUI 8 beta would be available to owners of the following devices: Mi Max, Mi Note, Mi 5, Mi 4, Mi 4i, Mi 3, Mi 2, Redmi Note Prime, Redmi Note 3, Redmi Note 2, Redmi Note, Redmi 2 Prime, Redmi 2 and Redmi 1s. Updates will be available OTA via the Mi Community or MIUI forum.

Some of the cool new stuff to look forward to includes Mi Cloud Photo Sync, for freeing up valuable storage space on your device by pushing your photos to the cloud and you will soon be able to edit video on your device.You'll also get full-length screenshots and a floating tool button kind of like Samsung's ToolBox. According to NDTV, Xiaomi has also teamed up with Mobikwik to provide one-tap DTH and mobile recharge, with 10% cash back monthly (50% for new users).

MIUI is used by over 200 million users globally, according to Xiaomi's Huge Barra. The first public beta will be available on July 11. Xiaomi promises a stable build by August 16, so even if the bleeding edge isn't quite as pain-free as you might have hoped, you'll only have to manage for a little over a month before things calm down.
