Amazon to pay out $70 million in refunds over unauthorized in-app purchases

Amazon has agreed to pay $70 million in refunds as a result of unauthorized in-app purchases made between November 2011 and May 2016. The news arrives after years of legal battles from parents whose children racked up significant bills in mobile payments.

The US Federal Trades Commission (FTC) announced yesterday that those involved should have started receiving emails from Amazon regarding the refunds, and that anybody who thinks they could be eligible should visit the dedicated Amazon refund page here.

The FTC began the suit in 2014, accusing Amazon of failing to acquire parental consent for purchases made in apps and games available at its store (at the time, a password for payments wasn't required). Both Google and Apple have previously settled with the FTC to the tune of millions of dollars for the same offence.

"This case demonstrates what should be a bedrock principle for all companies — you must get customers' consent before you charge them," said Thomas B. Pahl, acting director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection when the settlement was announced in April. "Consumers affected by Amazon's practices can now be compensated for charges they didn't expect or authorize."

This is great news for those customers who fell foul to this in the first place and for consumers at large — it's thankfully no longer so easy to drop 100 bucks on an in-app purchase (though it is still possible).

Gboard beta update improves search, makes it easy to find emojis, and more

Google has released a beta update for Gboard (6.3) that adds a bunch of new features to the popular keyboard app.

When you perform a search in Gboard, you now see multiple results in the form of a carousel of cards. Although the previous version did support this, it only worked with a limited number of queries. When it comes to location searches, Gboard used to display all the results in a vertical list. This has changed with the new version, as locations are now presented as cards that offer various shortcuts, allowing you to make a phone call, get directions, or open a location in Google Maps.

The new update also brings a share button to Gboard and combines the field for web searches with GIF lookup. To make it work, you have to select whether you'll perform a web or GIF search with the help of the new tab that's located in the bottom row of controls.

As for emojis, these can now be searched for with the help of a sketch pad. Just tap on the new icon and then search for an emoji by drawing it. It's a useful feature for those who use a lot of emojis — it can be hard to quickly find the one you're looking for.

Keep in mind that this is a beta update and only available to those who are part of Gboard's testing program. If you haven't already, you can sign up to become a tester via the button below, so you'll be able to try out all the new features mentioned in this post.

It's biggest selling point is probably the dual-camera setup on the back with 12 and 2 MP sensors. The smartphone sports a 3,340 mAh battery and ships with Android 6.0 Marshmallow on board, which you can upgrade to Nougat. Other things worth mentioning are a metal body, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, and an 8 MP selfie snapper.

Those of you interested in getting the device can visit Target's website via the button below.

Of course, Target isn't the only retailer that currently sells the Honor 6X. The smartphone has been available at Best Buy, Newegg, and on Honor's online store since it launched in the US.

Yu launches Yureka Black in India, and asserts it’s not going anywhere

Yu Mobiles, a subsidiary of Indian handset maker Micromax, announced the launch of its next smartphone – Yureka Black – today.

The launch comes close to the reports of Micromax planning to shut down Yu Televentures. The company launched nine smartphones in two years since inception, but the last device to be launched was in August 2016.

The Yu Yureka was the company's maiden smartphone launched in 2014, but the Yureka Black is not just a new color variant but also an overhaul in terms of specifications and design to keep up with the times.

Yu Yureka Black Specifications

  • Operating System: Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow
  • Display: 5-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) | 2.5D curved glass | Corning Gorilla Glass 3
  • Processor: 1.4 Ghz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 MSM8937 | Adreno 505 GPU
  • RAM: 4 GB LPDDR3
  • Internal Storage: 32 GB; expandable up to 128GB using microSD card
  • Front Camera: 8 MP
  • Rear Camera: 13 MP Sony IMX 258 | f/2.0 aperture | 5 element lens

  • Weight: 142 grams

While Android Marshmallow out of the box disappoints, thankfully, the company has shared that Android Nougat update for the smartphone would arrive soon – mid of July, that is. The beta for the same will be available right away on Yu forums.

Available in two color variants – Chrome Black and Matte Black – the Yu Yureka Black will be exclusively available on Flipkart starting 12:00 AM on June 6 (that's midnight on June 5!) at a price of ₹8,999 ($140).

While the phone looks pretty good on paper, has Yu done enough to mark their comeback of sorts in the market? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Google Photos v2.16 prepares to upgrade the camera shortcut, suggest photos to archive, and more [APK Teardown + Download]

photos

Update Wednesday is proving to be pretty active today as new versions of several apps are streaming out. The latest update to Photos doesn't appear to include anything we haven't heard about before, but it does seem to activate some of the features for everybody that had been on a staged rollout, like Archive and Suggested Sharing. If you haven't already received some of these features, and assuming they aren't geo-restricted, this is probably the version to get.

The BlackBerry KEYone is already facing shortages in the US

If you managed to purchase the TCL-made BlackBerry KEYone in the US when the phone finally went on sale Wednesday, you might want to consider yourself lucky. The unlocked phone, which costs $549.99, is already sold out on Amazon and Best Buy's websites in the US, in both of its carrier variants (one works with AT&T and T-Mobile's network, while the other works with Verizon Wireless).

BlackBerry KEYone review: Getting stuff done

If you really, really want the KEYone right now, your best bet at the moment is to see if your local Best Buy might have the phone in stock, but that's a long shot. In a series of Twitter posts on Wednesday, Steve Cistulli, the president of TCL Communication North America, admitted that at the moment "demand has been extremely high" for the KEYone. He added that his company is "working closely with our retail partners, ensuring additional stock is available ASAP so they can fulfill customer orders". Cistulli did not state just how many units of the KEYone were available to purchase in the US when the phone first went on sale. Sprint plans to sell its own version of the KEYone later this summer.

It looks like the demand for the phone in BlackBerry's home country of Canada is also high. Local carriers like Rogers, Bell, Bell MTS, SaskTel, and Telus started selling the KEYone as well on Wednesday, for $199 with a two year contract or for $699.99 with no contract. Cistulli previously stated that the KEYone was the most pre-ordered BlackBerry device ever from Rogers. The unlocked KEYone will go on sale in Canada later in June for $729.
