  • The NexDock Touch is now in the pre-order phase of its release.
  • The device is a laptop shell that is powered by your smartphone or other computing devices.
  • It will only cost $250, but the price will increase after the pre-order phase ends.

Nex Computers is rolling out the third iteration of its line of NexDock laptop shells. The NexDock Touch is the first in the line to offer a full touchscreen, which is a welcome upgrade over the NexDock 2. In fact, this was one of our biggest gripes of the NexDock 2 in our review of that unit.

Most of the other design elements of the NexDock 2 carry over to the NexDock Touch, which includes plenty of ports, a premium-feeling metal chassis, a huge touchpad, and a great keyboard.

If you are unfamiliar with laptop shells, we recommend reading our review of the NexDock 2. Essentially, there is no "laptop" inside NexDocks. Instead, the processing components — CPU, RAM, GPU, etc. — are provided by your smartphone, Raspberry Pi, or other computing devices. With the NexDock Touch, you can even hook up another laptop and use it as a secondary touch display.

The NexDock Touch is now in the pre-order phase with units costing just $250. That's an early bird price — the cost will definitely increase once the shell hits general sales. If you are interested in this, we highly recommend securing your order now before the price goes up!

Pre-orders require you to put down a fully-refundable deposit of $100. That secures you a unit that you can buy later this summer. At that point, you'll pay the $150 difference for the laptop and can also buy any accessories you might want. The NexDock Touch will start shipping in August 2020.
