Motorola reveals the Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus

Mere months after the release of Moto G5 and G5 Plus in March, it appears that they're now getting an upgrade. Today, Motorola unveiled two sequels to its mid-range device series — the Moto G5S (above) and the Moto G5S Plus (below).

The new Moto G5S comes with an evident redesign of the G5 exterior and it's now an all-metal smartphone made out of a single block of aluminum. The battery has also received some love, and its capacity has been bumped to 3,000 mAh, as opposed to the 2,800 mAh power pack on the regular Moto G5.

The rear-facing camera has been overhauled too, and it now boasts a 16 MP sensor instead of the previous 13 MP one. In terms of the selfie camera, Motorola has decided to include the same 5 MP sensor, but complemented it with its own flash. The other addition on the front is the bigger display, which now measures at 5.2 inches compared to the previous 5-inch screen.

The Moto G5S also includes a 1.4 GHz octa-core processor, though the amount of RAM it will house, and internal storage capacity, is yet to be disclosed.

As for the Moto G5S Plus, the most obvious change is the rear camera. The G5S Plus comes with a dual-camera setup that looks similar to what's found on the recently-unveiled Moto Z2 Force. However, unlike the 12 MP sensors on the Force, the G5S Plus arrives with a dual 13 MP ones. We assume that the software that controls the new setup is almost identical to that on the Moto Z2 Force, though.

The front camera has been improved too, as Motorola has replaced the 5 MP sensor with an 8 MP one, and it now features a flash. Just like its smaller sibling, the Moto G5S Plus also comes with an all-metal unibody design and a slightly bigger screen at 5.5 inches (up from 5.2 inches).

As for the chipset, the G5S Plus will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 2.0 GHz octa-core processor but, once again, RAM and storage values haven't been discussed.

Both phones have received all the latest Moto Experiences — such as Night Display and Quick Reply — and they still include a fingerprint scanner as the previous devices did. Though it wasn't spelled out, presumably they run on Android Nougat, too.

The Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus will be available "in various countries globally" this month and will make their way to the US later this fall. The price of the Moto G5S will start at €249 (around $294) and the Moto G5S Plus will launch for €299 (around $353).

We'll have more for you on these handsets soon: in the meantime, what do you think of what the Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus have to offer? Let us know in the comments.
