The new Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro and Gear Sport are aiming for the fitness crowd

As Samsung said it would last week during the Galaxy Note 8 launch, the company has used its IFA 2017 press event in Berlin today to formally introduce two new wearable products. Most of the details about the Gear Fit 2 Pro fitness tracker have already leaked, but Samsung also introduced a new smartwatch, the Gear Sport, today as well.

Gear Sport

The Samsung Gear Sport comes with a 1.2-inch circular screen with a 320 x 320 resolution and Gorilla Glass 3, a water resistance rating of five atmospheres, as well as a focus on nutrition, with the ability to monitor your calorie balance throughout the day. The Gear Sport will include access to fitness programs, along with a way to help you complete your weight loss goals.

This new smartwatch will also be able to connect to Samsung's smart TVs via the Samsung Connect app, and will support the company's Samsung Pay service with its NFC hardware.

Compared to the earlier Samsung Gear S3, the new Gear Sport will have a smaller battery (300 mAh for the Gear Sport, compared to the 380 mAh for the Gear S3), so on the surface, the new watch looks like it will have a shorter battery life on a single charge. The 1.2-inch display on the Gear Sport is also smaller than the 1.3-inch Gear S3, and will have a smaller screen resolution. There's also no indication that the Gear Sport will have an LTE model, like the Gear S3 has. However, the Gear Sport does have the stronger 5 atm water resistance rating, compared to the IP68 rating on the Gear S3.

Gear Fit 2 Pro

As we stated earlier, many details for the Gear Fit 2 Pro have previously leaked, but now it's finally official. The fitness tracker will have a 1.5-inch curved display, a 5 atm water resistance rating and features specifically made for swimmers, including ways for the wearable to track a user's stroke type, stroke count, and lap count. It will also have a continuous heart rate monitor.

In addition, the Gear Fit 2 Pro will come with a built-in GPS, as well as a handy automatic workout detection feature.

What's more, Samsung's new wearable will also come with a one year free subscription to Under Amour's online service, along with partnerships with Speedo and Spotify. The wearable will come in black and red colors and in large and small sizes. The large version will have a strap that can handle wrists between 158 and 205 mm while the small version is for writs between 125 and 165 mm.

Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro specs

  • Display: 1.5-inch Super AMOLED curved screen at 216 x 432 resolution
  • Processor: Dual-core 1.0 GHz CPU
  • RAM: 512 MB
  • Storage: 4 GB
  • Battery: 200 mAh
  • Dimensions: 25.0 x 51.3 mm, 34g (Large) and 33g (Small)
  • OS: Samsung Tizen

The Gear Fit 2 Pro shares many of the same hardware specs as the older Gear Fit 2, which was first announced in June 2016. Both have a 1.5-inch display, a 200 mAh battery, 4 GB of onboard storage, and 512 GB of RAM. However, the Gear Fit 2 Pro seems to be a bit bigger than the Gear Fit 2 (25.0 x 51.3 mm compared to 24.5 x 51.2 mm) and a few grams heavier (34 and 33 grams for the large and small models compared to 30 and 28 grams). That may be due in part because the Gear Fit 2 Pro has a 5 atm water resistance rating, compared to the IP68 water resistance rating for the older Gear Fit 2.
