App developers are pushing the envelope on a daily basis trying to improve and enhance our smartphone and tablet experiences. In fact, so many Android apps come out every day that it's difficult to keep track of them all. Barre
Price: Free
Barre is a free workout app with a fusion of meditation, yoga, and ballet. It's a beginner-friendly app with a ton of different exercises. You can put together a workout for all kinds of training, but it mainly focuses on balance, flexibility, and stamina. The app is entirely free so you can do all the workouts you want and it even works offline. We don't think it'll stay free but for now it's an excellent newer workout app.
Color by Number Oil Painting
Price: Free / $19.99 per month
Color by Number Oil Painting is a coloring book app with a neat look to it. It uses a color-by-number system and the colors make it look like oil paintings. It's a relaxing app with a slight learning curve. You select your color and then select the portions you want to color in. You can have the app fill in smaller sections if you want to. However, the relaxation is in the concentration to get it all done. The subscription price is insanely expensive and entirely unreasonable. We don't recommend it in the slightest, but the free portions of the app are still good.
Flow Desktop Launcher
Price: Free / $2.49
Flow Desktop Launcher isn't a regular launcher. It uses Android 10's desktop mode to use Android apps on your computer. The app is in early beta so there are a ton of bugs. Additionally, the app is only tested on a few Android devices at this time. Still, it's a really neat idea. You can connect your phone to your computer like Samsung's DeX mode and use Android apps, respond to texts, and all sorts of other stuff. The app is free with an optional premium version for developer support.
gesturePlus
Price: Free / $2.49
gesturePlus is an Android customization app. It basically turns the navigation bar on Android 10 into an app or task launcher. You set the app and then tap or long press the navigation bar to launch the task or app. You can put any app you want there for quick launches. The app also supports over four dozen other tasks such as the flashlight, screenshot, Google Assistant, or even muting your phone. It's new so there are bugs. However, it seems to work okay on most devices not made by Huawei.
Google Digital Wellbeing apps
Price: Free
Google launched three new experimental Digital Wellbeing apps. The first one is kind of ridiculous. It wants you to print out a special envelope for your phone and then you only actually get to use the dialer app. We understand the premise but the execution feels really weird. In any case, the other two are much more fun. They are both live wallpapers. The first one shows a timer with your screen on time to king of self-shame yourself into turning off your phone and Activity Bubbles does much the same with a neater visualization other than a timer. The two live wallpapers are actually pretty cool for a little bit of self policing, but envelope is just a little bit too silly. Hit the button below for download links to all three apps.
Microsoft Edge
Price: Free
Microsoft Edge is back in beta. Microsoft replaced their surprisingly good browser with a new one based on Google's Chromium. This new version still feels demonstrably different from Google Chrome even if the desktop version is basically a Chrome clone. You get a lot of the same features, including syncing between devices, bookmarks, search, and all kinds of stuff. In any case, it's a re-release big enough to warrant a placement on the list and, honestly, it works just fine. You can get the app below and the desktop version here.
My Limit
Price: Free
My Limit is a fairly simple app. You open the app, input your weight and the amount of alcohol you drank on any given evening. The app uses an algorithm to calculate how drunk you are. It's not 100% accurate, but it's close enough to help you avoid a DUI. It launched a few days before New Years Eve and we thought that an appropriate time to launch. However, it's useful basically any time you go out to drink. It rounds up its estimates a bit, but it is a checker and not a 100% accurate test nor does it advertise itself as a 100% accurate test. If you're above the legal limit, do yourself and everyone a favor and grab an Uber.
Nude
Price: Free
Nude is an app that doesn't lie about why it does what it does. The app hides private photos and videos from curious eyes that aren't yours. Obviously, this was designed for NSFW content. However, you can use it for most things. The app works 100% offline and doesn't use cloud storage at all. Additionally, it supports fingerprint scanners and some other basic gallery features. It does have a PIN, but not a PIN recovery tool so make sure you write that down somewhere. It's not quite as intense as most gallery vault apps and that's perhaps why it's pretty good. It hides the photos and videos from others and not you, so it works fine aside from some minor bugs.
Playlistmania
Price: Free
Playlistmania is a music playlist app with a fun premise. It lets you import, export, and discover playlists from other streaming services. It only works between Deezer and Spotify right now and we hope it expands to others eventually. Basically, you log into your Deezer, find a Spotify playlist, and Playlistmania converts it from a Spotify playlist to Deezer (or vice versa). It's a bit limited to those two streaming services but we like the idea.
Square Appointments (beta)
Price: Free
Square Appointments is a new app from Square, makers of the little card readers you can attach to your phone. This app works as an appointment service. You can schedule clients for sessions in whatever business you do. Additionally, the app can forward updates, reminders, and other messages to your clients. Clients can also book through the app and the app handles the entire checkout process. It's in beta so there are bugs and we imagine more features are on the way as well. However, this promises to be a good tool for a small business.
