OnePlus has released a beta build of the Marshmallow-based OxygenOS 3.0 ROM for the OnePlus 2. While this might not be the official OnePlus 2 Marshmallow update everyone has been waiting for, it is in the final stages before being finalized. The best part is you can download it right now.

OnePlus is calling the beta release a "community build", meaning it is essentially targeted at the die-hard OnePlus faithful to help identify any last minute bugs and help get everything ready for widespread release. But you don't need to be a OnePlus forum member to download and install it, which you can do here.

OnePlus began a limited soak test for OxygenOS 3.0 a couple of weeks ago, and while this beta build is not exactly bug-free – even by OnePlus' own admission – it is considered "daily driver material". OnePlus has shared a list of known issues, so take a look at those before pulling the trigger. If you're at all concerned, you're probably better off waiting for the final release.

OnePlus is specifically requesting feedback on the following:

  • Network testing (how is this update working on your specific carrier, your specific region?)
  • Are you noticing improvements to the camera (both UI and picture quality)?
  • Performance and battery life – let us know how your phone runs.

The beta firmware is fully functional with OTAs so even if you flash it now, you'll still get the official OTA in the near future. Amongst the Marshmallow update is a new camera UI, improved Shelf, new wallpaper picker, fingerprint reader improvements, March security patches, some Settings changes for app permissions and the Alert Slider and the usual system performance and big fixes.

You'll lose your stored fingerprints if you flash the firmware and you'll also lose your presets and tuner settings in MaxxAudio. You won't be able to downgrade back to OxygenOS 2.x without wiping your data and you'll likely require some app updates to get them jiving with Marshmallow's API level 23.

What are your thoughts on OnePlus' rollout of Marshmallow for the OnePlus 2?
