OnePlus 7 is easily one of the best phones under 40,000 rupees

If you're looking for flagship power though, you'll more often than not have to drop a decent chunk of money, with some smartphones priced close to 1 lakh rupees (~$1450) and beyond. The great news is that there quite a few options that come with the same high-end processing package, but are much cheaper. Here's a look at some of the best phones under 40,000 rupees in India!

Best phones under 40,000 rupees in India:

  1. OnePlus 7
  2. Oppo Reno 2
  3. Asus 6Z
  4. Black Shark 2
  5. Nubia Red Magic 3
  6. Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL

Editor's Note: We will continue to update this list of best phones under 40,000 rupees when they are released.

1. OnePlus 7

OnePlus 7 in hand showing display

The OnePlus 7 Pro has received all the attention, but the OnePlus 7 offers excellent bang for your buck. There are no fancy pop-up cameras, completely bezel-less displays, or triple rear cameras here. What you do get is the same flagship processor, matching hardware aside from the rear camera, identical performance, and the same front-facing camera, but just not in a pop-up.

It's not surprising that everyone wants the latest and greatest. But if value for money is what you're after, the OnePlus 7 is the better way to go. The best part is that the OnePlus 7 comes with the same starting price as the OnePlus 6T. It may be significantly cheaper than the competition, including its high-end sibling, but it doesn't lack in performance or features. The OnePlus 7 is undoubtedly one of the best phones under 40,000 rupees in India.

OnePlus 7 specs:

  • Display: 6.41-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 855
  • RAM: 6/8GB
  • Storage: 128/256GB
  • Rear camera: 48MP and 5MP
  • Front camera: 16MP
  • Battery: 3,700mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

2. Oppo Reno 2

The Reno 10x Zoom was definitely unique, but Oppo manages to take things a few steps further with its successor — the Oppo Reno 2. The distinct shark-fin pop-up housing for the selfie camera returns and Oppo ups the ante in the camera department with a new quad-camera setup and its 20x zoom capability.

While the camera may steal all the headlines, what also stands out about the Reno 2 is its design and build quality. It's a beautiful looking phone and offers a luxurious, high-end feel that a lot of flagship phones aren't able to provide. It's slightly pricier than you'd expect, but if a flagship feel and unique design are what you're after, the Oppo Reno 2 certainly delivers.

Oppo Reno 2 specs:

  • Display: 6.5-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 730
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Storage: 256GB
  • Rear camera: 48MP, 13MP, 8MP, and 2MP
  • Front camera: 16MP
  • Battery: 4,000mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

3. Asus 6Z

Asus Zenfone 6 camera macro - a great smartphone under 40,000 rupees

Asus surprised everyone with the really good Zenfone 5Z last year. Recent legal troubles have forced the company to drop the Zenfone branding, but its successor — the Asus 6Z — retains what is important. Once again, it's a high-end smartphone that is very aggressively priced. This time around, it also comes with a unique design feature that makes it stand out in this competitive field. In terms of specifications and hardware, you get everything you'd expect from a 2019 flagship.

What makes the 6Z unique though is its camera setup. The dual rear camera setup flips around the top of the phone to serve as a front-facing camera. It's not just about the camera either. The Asus 6Z also has one of the largest batteries in a smartphone and, as a result, the best battery life in this price range. This is just another of many reasons why the Asus 6Z is worth your money.

Asus 6Z specs:

  • Display: 6.4-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 855
  • RAM: 6/8GB
  • Storage: 64/128/256GB
  • Rear camera: 48MP and 13MP
  • Front camera: Rear camera flips around
  • Battery: 5,000mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

4. Black Shark 2

Black Shark 2 Review shark fin

The original gaming smartphone from Black Shark was never released in India. The good news for gaming fans in the country is that its successor — the Black Shark 2 — is available, and at under 40,000 rupees as well.

The specs sheet reads the same as most of the other smartphones on this list. However, the Black Shark 2 gains its gaming bona fides with features that boost performance. It is liquid-cooled and has a multi-layered heat dissipation system meant to move thermal energy away from the processor cores. And of course, it looks like a gaming phone through and through. With green accents, a reflective glass inset, and glowing logo, the Black Shark 2 is bound to turn heads.

Only the lower-end version of the Black Shark 2 comes under the limits of this list of best phones under 40,000 rupees. If you want double the RAM (a whopping 12GB!), it'll set you back an additional 10,000 rupees (~$145).

Black Shark 2 specs:

  • Display: 6.39-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 855
  • RAM: 6/12GB
  • Storage: 128/256GB
  • Rear camera: 48MP and 12MP
  • Front camera: 20MP
  • Battery: 4,000mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

5. Nubia Red Magic 3

Read Magic 3 Rear - a great smartphone under 40,000 rupees

Under 40,000 rupees is apparently the price range is which gaming smartphones have found their place. Joining the Black Shark 2 is the Nubia Red Magic 3. However, while the former has a few gamer-friendly features, the Red Magic 3 takes things to another level.

First, aesthetics. If there's a look that defines "gaming smartphone," this is it. It's a large, thick phone, but that's to accommodate a physical fan. Active liquid cooling is also available to help keep the temperature down. You get physical, but capacitive, shoulder buttons that further enhance the gaming experience. There's also a pin connector to attach peripherals, and a dedicated button to switch to game mode.

The display comes with a 90Hz refresh rate that looks amazing with games that support this feature. Finally, there are quite a few software features that help with gaming performance. It doesn't end there either. While not gaming related, the Red Magic 3 is the first phone to feature 8K video recording. There's a lot going on here, at a price point that is half some of the competition.

Nubia Red Magic 3 specs:

  • Display: 6.65-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 855
  • RAM: 8/12GB
  • Storage: 128/256GB
  • Rear camera: 48MP
  • Front camera: 16MP
  • Battery: 5,000mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

6. Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL

Pixel 3a Next to Pixel 3a XL

With the Pixel series, Google has pretty much exclusively focused on top-tier smartphones. The original Pixel, Pixel 2, and Pixel 3 were all very pricey at launch. The good news is that Google is back to its more affordable roots with the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL. The bad news is that these phones aren't particularly affordable in India when compared to the similarly-specced competition that is half its price.

However, what makes the Pixel 3a's stand out and a worthy addition to this list is that they retain the fantastic camera of the high-end Pixel 3. Given how expensive the Google flagship is, it's great that you can get one of the best smartphone cameras on the market at under 40,000 rupees. Of course, the smooth software experience and the fact that it was one of the first devices to get Android 10 are huge positives as well.

Pixel 3a specs:

  • Display: 5.6-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 670
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Storage: 64GB
  • Rear camera: 12.2MP
  • Front camera: 8MP
  • Battery: 3,000mAh
  • Software: Android 10

Pixel 3a XL specs:

  • Display: 6-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 670
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Storage: 64GB
  • Rear camera: 12.2MP
  • Front camera: 8MP
  • Battery: 3,700mAh
  • Software: Android 10
