New Galaxy A90 5G leaks suggest flagship specs for mid-range Samsung phones

Samsung is ramping up competition in the smartphone market with a slew of launches across different price points, a strategy which seems to be helping the South Korean vendor fend off the likes of Xiaomi, OnePlus and Huawei.

The latest step towards growing its mid-range portfolio and spicing it up with flagship-grade specs seems to be the upcoming Samsung Galaxy A90. The phone may have appeared in all its glory via a retail box leak (courtesy of Slashleaks and a Korean-language forum), as well as some marketing material outed on Twitter by leakster Evan Blass.

We first heard about the Galaxy A90 back in June when known tipster OnLeaks shared information on the two new devices in the upcoming series, claiming fairly high-end specs. And it looks like that leak was right on the money.

Supposed specs for Galaxy A90 5G

The new retail box leak (seen above) and marketing videos of the Galaxy A90 reveal a white-coloured 5G variant of the phone. While the box gives away a spec rundown of the device, the videos show some additional features, such as the presence of a USB-C port, adjustable zoom and bokeh effects on the camera app, and more.

We can see that Samsung is apparently going for the same display size as the Galaxy S10 5G on the new 5G A90. The box shows a Full HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-U display measuring 6.7 inches (or 170.3mm). An unspecified octa-core processor, potentially the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, is mentioned alongside 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

When it comes to flagship phones, Samsung usually uses a Snapdragon processor in the U.S. and an Exynos processor in the likes of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. But it's unclear whether the firm will follow this pattern for the Galaxy A90 5G.

Editor's Pick

On the camera front, the Galaxy A90 5G gets triple rear cameras consisting of 48MP, 5MP, and 8MP lenses. A 32MP camera rests within the U-shaped notch on the front. By comparison, the regular 4G variant of the phone is expected to get a 48MP+12MP+5MP camera combo.

Although the battery capacity of the phone isn't mentioned on the box, it does say that the A90 5G will feature Super Fast Charging. The promo videos also hint at the same.

Since there's no fingerprint scanner seen on the leaked Galaxy A90 5G, it's safe to assume that the A90 5G will feature an in-display fingerprint sensor. This has also been the case for the recently launched Galaxy A50s and Galaxy A30s.

What about pricing?

The pricing on the Galaxy A90 5G box isn't shown in the picture, but we assume it won't be as affordable as its predecessor, the Galaxy A80, simply because of the expected use of the Snapdragon 855 chipset.

Then again, given Samsung's efforts to get one over its Chinese rivals, it's possible we have a truly affordable, sub-$1000 5G Samsung phone with flagship specs on our hands — one that could go head-to-head with the Mi Mix 3 5G or the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G.
