GM rolls out Android Auto updates to Chevy, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac

You've got Android on your phone, your tablet, and your TV. But then when you head out to your vehicle, it might be the case that your only option is Apple CarPlay. Now, however, GM is rolling out Android Auto updates to a slew of vehicles that previously only supported Apple CarPlay. The update expands GM's Android Auto availability to over 30 US model automobiles and 40 global models, meaning GM currently has the largest deployment of Android Auto vehicles in the world.

This rollout affects select Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles. The update can be acquired by visiting your local dealer and requesting it. Installation is supposed to only take around thirty minutes, and then you'll be the proud owner of an Android Auto-capable vehicle. To see if your vehicle qualifies, check your car company's official announcement linked above.

This is part of an ongoing effort on the part of GM to bring truly updatable vehicles to market. They believe that the ability to keep software on a vehicle fresh could play a huge role in maintaining the vehicle's value years after purchase. In an increasingly app-happy world, this seems to make a lot of sense.

GM isn't the only car maker getting in on the Android Auto action. Kia wants to have the capability in every vehicle they manufacture for Europe within the next two years, and earlier this year, Hyundai teased the least expensive AA vehicle we've ever seen. Ford is also jumping onto the bandwagon with gusto, so it looks like we can expect to see a lot more Android Auto on the road in the future.

What are your thoughts regarding the expansion of Android's in-vehicle "infotainment" system? Have you had experience with Android Auto to any capacity? If so, let us know your take in the comments below.
