Project Fi is now invite-free in the US, Nexus 5X available for just $199 with activation

Google first introduced its Project Fi service about 10 months ago, and it's achieved quite the reputation since its launch. It's easy to use, affordable (depending on how much data you use), and also offers data-only plans if you have a tablet you'd like to add to your account. The problem is, Project Fi has been an invite-only service this whole time. Now, invites for the service aren't particularly difficult to get a hold of, but the fact that they're still required seems to label Project Fi as more of a beta service than something that's ready for the general public.

With that said, it looks like Google is ready to take the next step forward with Project Fi and eliminate the invite system for good! Now people in the United States can sign up for Google's service without having to wait in line for an invite.

Perhaps the more exciting news here is a new promotion Google is launching to celebrate the axing of the invites. For the next month, Google is offering up to $150 off the Nexus 5X when you buy the device through Google and activate it on Project Fi. Yes, really — you can get the LG-made Nexus 5X for just $199 if you activate it on Project Fi.

You'll need to activate Fi service on your account within 30 days after the device ships, otherwise an additional $150 will be charged to your Google Payments account to make up for the discount. Also, if you happen to purchase a 5X for full price from the Google Store while this offer is valid and activate it on Fi within 30 days, Google will send you a partial refund to match the promotional price. The offer is valid from March 7 to April 7, and there's a limit of one discounted Nexus 5X per customer.

As far as pricing is concerned, you can either pay for the device upfront or overtime. The 16GB Nexus 5X will cost $199, or the 32GB variant will go for $249. If you choose to pay overtime, the 16GB model will cost you $8.29 per month for 24 months, and the 32GB version will cost you $10.38 per month for 24 months.

Despite having just 2GB of RAM and not-so-impressive battery life, the Nexus 5X is definitely worth the $199 price point. It runs the latest version of Android, has one of the best cameras available on a smartphone to date, and comes with a super fast Nexus Imprint fingerprint sensor on the back.
