- eBay now offers prepaid plans through Red Pocket Mobile when you buy a smartphone.
- The plans start at $5 a month and range from 500MB to 5GB of LTE speeds each month.
- You can pick from five plans using a checkbox on a product page.
Already used to selling stuff for less than the competition, online marketplace eBay announced a partnership with prepaid carrier Red Pocket Mobile to offer smartphone buyers plans that start at $5 a month.
When you buy a smartphone on eBay, you now see a checkbox underneath the "Add to cart" button. The checkbox nets you 30 days of unlimited talk and text, along with 5GB of LTE data, for $29.
Alternatively, you can upgrade your plan to one of four available 360-day plans: Basic, Essentials, Best Value, and Unlimited. The $60 Basic plan includes 100 minutes, 100 text messages, and 500MB of LTE data each month. The $99 Essentials features the same amount of monthly data, but includes 500 minutes and 500 messages.
The $199 Best Value plan features unlimited talk and text, along with 1GB of LTE data each month. Finally, the $249 Unlimited plan throws in 2GB of LTE data each month.
All four plans, along with the 30-day Unlimited plan, include free international calls to over 7o countries. Because Red Pocket Mobile uses every major US carrier's network, the same goes for all five plans.
The partnership makes plenty of sense for both companies. Red Pocket Mobile is not the most well-known prepaid carrier, so the exposure will hopefully be to the company's benefit. It also makes sense that those who might want to spend less on smartphones will want to spend less on their plans, too.
eBay, meanwhile, has been a go-to site for folks that want to save some scratch on their next smartphone purchase. With October set to be an explosive month for smartphone releases and the holidays right around the corner, it is prime pickings for the frugal among us.
